State Bar members are invited to attend the "Trial By Jury: The Lawyers' Craft" Law-related Education program on Sept. 29 at Marquette University High School, from 6 to 8 p.m. For 16 years, the State Bar and the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers (WATL) have presented this free mock trial demonstration at the State Fair.

"The State Bar and WATL believe the change in venue will provide a better backdrop for this event since it is a school environment," says Dee Runaas, State Bar Law-related Education coordinator.

Milwaukee Attorney Will Techmeier will moderate the program. Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Paul Van Grunsven will preside. Other participants include Milwaukee attorneys Ray Dall'Osto as defense counsel and Mark Williams as prosecution counsel. The witnesses will be played by high school students. The jury will be selected from the audience.

"Trial by Jury" will present the Annie Lemberger case. In 1911, the body of 7-year-old Lemberger was found floating in Lake Monona. After years of legal wrangling and arguments over "who dunnit," the case is still unresolved. The Lemberger case was last tried in 2004 by 179 Wisconsin Mock Trial high school teams.

"We are currently seeking volunteers for the 2005 - 06 Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Program," says Runaas. "The Mock Trial Program is an excellent opportunity for legal professionals to be involved in community service and help young people develop problem-solving skills. The program continues to expand annually, and as a result there is always a need for more volunteers."

The Marquette University High School, 3401 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin will host the "Trial By Jury" event, which is open to the public.
