After months of preparation, area high school students are gearing up for the regional round of the State Bar of Wisconsin's Mock Trial Tournament this weekend.

The tournament is being held at sixteen different regional sites this Saturday, February 10th, including Eau Claire, Wausau, Green Bay, Wisconsin Rapids, Appleton, La Crosse, Madison, Sheboygan, Janesville, Milwaukee, Hudson, Rhinelander, Fond du Lac, Waukesha, Racine and Sturgeon Bay.

The winning team from each regional will move on to the tournament semifinals in Madison on Sunday, March 11th. The finals will be held Monday, March 12th at the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and the state champion will represent Wisconsin at the National Mock Trial Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska in May.

This year's case involves a lawsuit by the parents of a high school student who died after an illness he contracted shortly after swimming in a nearby creek. The parents are suing a sheep and cattle company that operates near the creek for wrongful death, claiming the water in the creek was polluted by the company's runoff from animal waste and officials from the company knew or should have known about the pollution and did nothing about it.

For more information, contact any of the participating schools, or call Dee Runaas at the State Bar of Wisconsin at (608) 250-6191, or e-mail her at drunaas@wisbar.org.
