The State Bar Building for Success: The Ultimate 'How-to' Seminar for New and Not-So-New Lawyers is coming to Milwaukee, Madison, and Wausau in January. Presented by the State Bar in conjunction with the Young Lawyers and Senior Lawyers divisions, a distinguished faculty will focus on topics essential to succeeding in the business of practicing law.

"This organization exists to help its members succeed," says State Bar President George Burnett. "From civility to time management, 'Building for Success' will give lawyers the professional building blocks to a successful practice."

This unique program includes a full day of interactive sessions with judges, colleagues, and presenters in a combination of plenary and breakout sessions. Lawyers new and not-so-new will find these topics useful - Building Your Practice With Know-How and Class; Networking: It's a Contact Sport; Let's Make a Deal: The Art of Negotiation; Client-based Counseling Practices: Getting the Story Straight; Drafting Documents: Some Quick but Thoughtful Steps; The Art of Persuasion: Selling Your Client and Yourself; Life and Lawyering: Finding the Balance; All in the Family: Handling Divorce Cases; and No Such Thing as a Small Law Firm: Clarence Darrow Was a Solo Practitioner.

Local judges and experienced attorneys will be on hand to share their expertise from the opening breakfast social through the closing reception. During lunch, technology experts will offer tips on effective and affordable law office technology systems. Participants will receive a CD with answers to "Questions I Wish That I Asked in Law School."

In September 2002, Burnett appointed a committee of lawyers and judges to develop the program. The committee, cochaired by Nathan Fishbach, Whyte, Hirschboek, Dudek S.C., and Tom Dixon, State Bar CLE Director, has dedicated the program to the memory of Leonard Loeb, a former State Bar president who passed away in March of this year.

"Leonard was very enthusiastic about a 'bridge-the-gap' type of seminar that would take advantage of what more experienced practitioners had to offer to their newer counterparts," says Fishbach. "We are pleased that the Young Lawyers and Senior Lawyers divisions are both involved in this project."

The committee is seeking sponsorships to keep the registration fee at a nominal $59. Sponsors at press time include WILMIC and Lexis.

The program will be presented on Jan. 14 in Milwaukee, Jan. 15 in Madison, and Jan. 30 in Wausau. Tuition is $59, and the program will be submitted for CLE credits. For information about becoming a sponsor or to register, contact the State Bar at (800) 728-7788 or (608) 257-3838.
