May 13, 2009 – In response to last year’s widespread flooding in Wisconsin and the need for more lawyers to be trained to handle a disaster, the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Young Lawyers Division is teaming up with professionals from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and private practitioners to offer a free disaster legal services training program.

Helping Victims of a Natural Disaster will educate lawyers about common legal issues faced by victims of a natural disaster.

“We all witnessed the devastation caused by last year’s floods. It is important that State Bar members acquire the skills and tools they need to make a difference and help their communities address any future disasters,” said State Bar President Diane Diel. “I commend the State Bar’s Young Lawyers Division for its initiative and leadership in helping prepare attorneys to respond to legal issues faced by victims of natural disaster, and strongly urge our members to attend this free training.”

The program will take place at the State Bar Center in Madison on the afternoon of Thursday, May 21, 2009. Topics include FEMA and other federal assistance, municipal liability, landlord/tenant disputes, insurance law, common fraud schemes and consumer protection issues. This program will be submitted to the Board of Bar Examiners for 3.5 credits.
