Young Lawyers: Meet You in Wisconsin Dells on March 11

It's all happening: The Young Lawyers Conference, held by the State Bar of Wisconsin's Young Lawyers Division (YLD), is coming to Wisconsin Dells on March 11. Get CLE and see your colleagues: Sign up today. Tuition is complimentary for YLD members.

March 2, 2022 – Something to celebrate: For the first time since 2019, the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Young Lawyers Conference on March 11 is returning to Wisconsin Dells. Hosted by the State Bar’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD), the conference returns to the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

Samantha Huddleston, a director with the YLD, said that holding the event in-person will be a welcome change from virtual conferences of the past two years. “We have young lawyers who have never practiced in a court room. We have young lawyers who have never had the opportunity to even see their office space yet. So for us to have a networking event and a learning opportunity in person is huge.”

“This is an important conference for young lawyers – and it is a conference best experienced in-person,” said Emil Ovbiagele, YLD president. “The YLD board made it a priority after hearing from YLD members. We are looking forward to holding this as an in-person event after two years’ hiatus.”

“This event will have the energy that really occurs best in-person. While video conferences will have a time and place going forward, it is hard for them to replicate the conversations and connections that can best occur in-person,” said Jose Castro, YLD president-elect.

“This conference is a great place to learn about current issues facing young or new attorneys, while connecting with a diverse group of similarly situated attorneys from around the state,” Castro said.

The Pandemic Created Special Challenges for Young Lawyers

Huddleston said that the pandemic has posed special challenges for young lawyers, including missing out on mentoring and networking opportunities.

“One of the main goals of the conference is to reiterate to young lawyers that that personal aspect is an important piece of our profession – we are in this as a team. We need to band together, learn from each other, and boost each other up so that we can be the best lawyers we can be for our clients.”

Huddleston said conference attendees can look forward to CLE presentations (including one on ethics and one on cryptocurrency); a judges’ panel; sessions on State Bar resources; and a networking reception.

“Hopefully, attorneys can get together and talk about what they’ve had to deal with the last couple of years and what they’re looking forward to, and really make those connections that hopefully carry over past the conference,” Huddleston said.

CLE sessions feature a mix of current issues and developing concerns that are important to young lawyers. Presentations include advice from the bench and on ethics issues, tips on how to make it easier to be an attorney in 2022 and options to handle student loan debt, what you need to know about ethics when working remotely, and the session “What’s New in the World of Cryptocurrency, Blockchain, and NFTs.” See WisBar.org's Marketplace for more information.

“We can’t wait to see everyone at Wisconsin Dells,” Ovbiagele said.

Celebrate a Mentor and an Outstanding Young Lawyer

The conference is also a time to celebrate a mentor – helping young lawyers gain experience and shape their careers – and a peer – a young lawyer making a difference in their community.

The recipients of the YLD's 2022 Outstanding Mentor and Outstanding Young Lawyer awards will be announced at the conference – along with a surprise special award to honor a long-time supporter of young lawyers.
