Feb. 5, 2020 – More than 1,000 high school students are preparing to compete in the State Bar of Wisconsin 2020 High School Mock Trial regional competition on Feb. 8, 2020.

The competition involves 103 teams competing in 11 regional tournaments, held in local courthouses around Wisconsin. In the regional competitions, teams compete in two rounds to determine which teams make it to the semi-final rounds in Madison.

The top 22 teams will advance to the semifinals in Madison on March 13 and 14, and the two finalists appear before judges in the State Capitol building in the state finals competition in Madison on March 15. The winner of the state finals will compete in the Mock Trial National Championship in Evansville, Indiana, on May 6-9, 2020.

Students Gain Understanding of Our Legal System

Mock trial provides high school students with an opportunity to tackle a fictional case with facts and materials developed by Wisconsin attorneys. This year, students are tackling the issues presented in the case Estate of Jonah Stark et. al. v. Clearwater Hills Country Club, involving a drowning at the country club.

The students – in teams of 6 to 12 – argue the case before a panel of volunteer attorneys and judges in the regional competitions. Acting in roles of attorneys and witnesses on both sides, students gain a deeper understanding of the court system as they develop their arguments and build their cases.

Supported by the Wisconsin Law Foundation and the State Bar

Since its inception in 1983, the Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Program has brought our legal system to life for thousands of students.

The Mock Trial program is funded by a generous grant from the Wisconsin Law Foundation, the charitable arm of the State Bar of Wisconsin, supporting law-related and public service programs statewide.

Attorneys are needed as volunteers for the competitions. To find out more, visit the Mock Trial volunteer page on WisBar.org and contact Katie Wilcox, Mock Trial program manager, at (608) 250-6191 or kwilcox@wisbar.org.
