The State Bar divisions are selecting candidates for their 2018 elections. Find out how to sign up to run for a leadership position with the Government, Nonresident, and Young Lawyers divisions.

Government Lawyers Division: Sign Up by Jan. 22

Members of the Government Lawyers Division (GLD) will elect a president-elect and three directors to serve in 2018.

GLD board members are involved in collaboration between the private and public sectors of the bar, provide opportunities for active participation of publicly employed State Bar members, and activities related to the practice of government attorneys.

Board members serve for two years. The president-elect serves for one year before becoming president for a year, followed by serving another year as past president.

The GLD Board meets three times a year in person and holds two teleconferences.

How to Apply to Run for a GLD Position: Send a letter of interest and resume to Bryant Park by Jan. 22, 2018.

The election begins April 9 and closes at midnight April 27, 2018. Terms begin July 1, 2018.

Nonresident Lawyers: Sign Up by Feb. 22

Members of the Nonresident Lawyers Division (NRLD) will choose a president-elect, who then serves as president, then past president, each for one-year terms. Five two-year board of directors’ positions are also open for 2018.

NRLD board members oversee the affairs of the division and its mission to help NRLD members participate in State Bar governance, stimulate activities of assistance to 8,000-plus NRLD members, and make recommendations to the State Bar Board of Governors (BOG), says James Casey, NRLD Nomination Committee chair.

Serving on the NRLD board “is a great experience and a wonderful way to meet attorneys from all over the country,” Casey says.

Board members serve for two years and the president-elect serves for one year before becoming president for a year, followed by serving another year as past president. The NRLD board meets two times a year in person and holds a teleconference the Monday before each BOG meeting. The president-elect also attends BOG meetings. All travel is reimbursed.

The election begins April 9 and closes at midnight April 27, 2018. Persons elected take office July 1, 2018.

Young Lawyers Division: Sign Up by Jan. 31 for Officer and March 1 for Board of Directors Positions

The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) includes lawyers within their first five years of practice or under the age of 36. Open positions are the president-elect, secretary, and five board of directors’ positions, with terms beginning July 1, 2018.

How to Apply to Run for a YLD Position: YLD members should send a statement of interest, resume, and a professional headshot photo to Lois Berning and Ben Roovers.

Limit statements of interest to 350 words for president-elect nominees and 250 words for all other nominees. The statements of interest will be included in the YLD newsletter Fresh Perspectives, on the YLD website on WisBar.org, and in the election ballots.

The deadline for nominations for the officer positions (president-elect and secretary) is Jan. 31, 2018.

The deadline for nominations for the open YLD board of directors’ positions is March 1, 2018. The election begins April 9 and closes at midnight April 27, 2018.
