    Judge Carl Ashley: 'We Still Have Work to Do'

    Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Carl Ashley has been named the State Bar of Wisconsin’s 2023 Diversity and Inclusion Trailblazer.

    May 3, 2023 – Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Carl Ashley has been named the State Bar of Wisconsin’s 2023 Diversity and Inclusion Trailblazer.

    The State Bar will recognize Ashley and other award recipients during the Member Recognition Celebration, which will be held at the Annual Meeting and Conference June 14-16 in Milwaukee.

    Judge Ashely, who was elected to the Milwaukee County bench in 1999, was recently named Milwaukee County’s chief judge.

    Ashley has led efforts to boost diversity in Wisconsin’s legal community.

    He chaired the State Bar’s Diversity Task Force in 2012 and was instrumental in encouraging the State Bar’s Board of Governors to make the Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Committee a standing committee that reports to the Executive Committee.

    Judge Ashley said that among the first things he and other task force members did in 2012 was travel around the state and talk to State Bar members about diversity.

    “What we found was, not surprisingly, we have a lot to do,” Ashley said. “We have a lot to consider in trying to make lawyers feel more welcome in the profession.”

    Join the celebration at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2022. The celebration takes place at the State Bar Annual Meeting & Conference. Conference registration is not required to attend.
