Feb. 1, 2023 – I think it is important for lawyers to contribute back in any way possible to support the present and the future of the profession.

Volunteering for service with the State Bar of Wisconsin has always been an important part of my contributions to the legal profession. My involvement started with the State Bar Young Lawyers Division – which is an excellent starting point for many lawyers to learn about the State Bar and to contribute back to their communities through YLD service programs.

I continued with service on the Committee on Professional Ethics, which was the starting point for my professional responsibility practice – because it is the best way to contribute back to the profession and to ensure the continued success of the legal profession and Wisconsin lawyers.

Your Unique Talents Enhance Our Profession

I have always felt that lawyers have unique backgrounds and training that can help others. I am asking you to contribute your time and your talents to help your State Bar, the legal profession, and your community. I am asking you to volunteer to serve on a State Bar committee.

Dean R. DietrichDean R. Dietrich, Marquette 1977, is the president-elect of the State Bar of Wisconsin. He is with the law firm of Weld Riley S.C., Wausau, and is past chair of the State Bar Professional Ethics Committee.

Every person has unique talents and characteristics, but lawyers have been trained to use their talents for the betterment of society and their community.

Serving on a State Bar committee gives you the opportunity to use your talents to improve the legal profession, access to justice, and oversight of our State Bar.

    Stand Up and Join Us

We all have faced challenging times over the past several years as we wrestled with the agony of the pandemic while at the same time learning how to be more self-sufficient. We face many unique challenges going forward, including the growing impact of technology on the practice of law and our profession.

It is time for everyone to stand up and volunteer to help face these many challenges.

Work on State Bar committees offers opportunities for lawyers of all different perspectives and personalities to come to the table to assist in providing the services necessary to meet the mission of the State Bar. The mission includes improving access to justice opportunities, providing better services to clients, and enhancing services to members of the bar.

It is only with your participation and assistance that these laudable goals can be accomplished. It is also a time to come forward and reengage with others in the legal profession as we all face similar challenges in today’s hectic world.
