May 17, 2023 – Early in 1973, former President Lyndon Johnson died of a heart attack two days after President Richard Nixon was inaugurated for his second term. The Watergate scandal was in the news, with the Senate hearings broadcast gavel to gavel.

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade. The U.S. with South Vietnam signed the Paris Peace Accords with North Vietnam. NASA launched the Mariner 10 toward Mercury and put Skylab 4 in orbit; Pioneer 10 arrived at Jupiter, and would continue its mission until 2003.

Tony Orlando and Dawn had a hit with “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree;” The Mary Tyler Moore Show was in the middle of its seven-year run; and on The Carol Burnett Show, Burnett, with Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Tim Conway, had people laughing at their televisions on a weekly basis.

And these 225 lawyers listed below were among those admitted to law practice in Wisconsin that year, taking the Attorney’s Oath and signing the Supreme Court’s Roll Book.

This year, the State Bar of Wisconsin is celebrating the lawyers admitted to practice in Wisconsin in 1973, reaching their 50-year milestone as Wisconsin lawyers. Together, we honor your years of practice and your many achievements.

Many of these 50-year members gathered with State Bar leaders and Chief Justice Annette Kingsland Ziegler at a celebration luncheon May 11 in Delafield.

Chief Justice Ziegler noted that among the 50-year members were circuit court judges and municipal court judges, government lawyers, corporate counsel, and lawyers in private practice.

Fifty years, she said, “is a measure of time, but it really doesn’t tell us all the people that you served and what a difference that you’ve made in individual people’s lives and in the law.”

“Some of you worked on appeals that resulted in further development of the law; some of you prosecuted criminals and gave hope to victims; some of you successfully defended people who were innocent and for those whose rights had been violated,” she said. “Some of you won significant cases that let people move on with their lives.”

Each and every 50-year member contributed to the legal profession in Wisconsin, she said. “You did it – and with vision, determination, and commitment.

"Lawyers don’t often receive recognition for the good work they do. “So today, I personally thank you on behalf of judges from around the state and the entire Supreme Court,” Chief Justice Ziegler said.
