Samuelson Set to Explain OLR Procedures at WSSFC

Judge Tim Samuelson is working to demystify the lawyer regulation process in Wisconsin.

Oct. 19, 2022 – Judge Tim Samuelson wants to demystify the lawyer regulation process in Wisconsin.

Samuelson, the director of the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s Office of Lawyer Regulation (OLR), will give a presentation at the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Solo and Small-firm Conference. The conference is scheduled for Oct. 27-29 at Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, with a virtual replay on Nov. 14-16.

“What I’m going to do is focus on our procedures,” Samuelson said. “I’ll talk about the lawyer regulation system in general, because it’s much more than OLR. What I’m trying to do is explain what we do, how we do it, and demystify the process.”

Samuelson said lawyers facing an OLR grievance should respond to it with the same care and preparation they would give to answering a pleading or a motion. He also said that more than 90% of OLR grievances are closed after a preliminary evaluation.

“So the overwhelming majority of the matters that are directed to our office are ultimately resolved without investigation and without discipline,” Samuelson said. “Not enough people know that.”
