May 1, 2019 – The Wisconsin Supreme Court has announced the re-election of Chief Justice Patience D. Roggensack as the court’s chief justice. Chief Justice Roggensack, who has served as chief justice since May 1, 2015, will serve another two-year term.

Under the Wisconsin Constitution, amended in 2015, the chief justice “shall be elected for a term of 2 years by a majority of the justices then serving on the court.” A majority of justices elected Roggensack as chief in 2015, and again in 2017.

Today, the court announced that a majority of justices elected Chief Justice Roggensack to a third, two-year term. Chief Justice Roggensack has served as a justice since 2003. Her current 10-year term as a justice expires in 2023.

The chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court is the administrative head of the Wisconsin judicial system and exercises administrative authority pursuant to procedures adopted by the Supreme Court, including presiding justice in meetings of the court.

State Bar President Christopher E. Rogers and State Bar Executive Director Larry J. Martin released a joint-statement on Chief Justice Roggensack’s re-election:

“As Chief Justice Roggensack begins her next term as leader of the court system, the State Bar of Wisconsin looks forward to continuing our common goal of strengthening the relationship between the bench and the bar, advancing public trust of the legal profession, and promoting a high-functioning justice system,” they said.

“We greatly appreciate her leadership in ensuring the justice system is funded appropriately and her advocacy in advancing research to ensure best practices are implemented including the use of treatment courts across Wisconsin.

“Congratulations to Chief Justice Roggensack on her re-election as chief justice.”
