Lawyer helps neighbors in aftermath of tornado, featured in TV spot

Attorney Dan WoodWhen a tornado passed through Wisconsin flattening many trees and homes in its path last June, many folks in Adams County were grateful that Attorney Dan Wood lives in their community.

Wood, a sole practitioner in Friendship, offered his legal expertise to help his neighbors sort through insurance policies, timber contracts, filing medical claims, and other legal matters.

The State Bar is featuring Wood in its fifth 30-second television spot, which airs in August, highlighting lawyers who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to community or pro bono service as part of the "Wisconsin Lawyers Make a Difference" TV series. The program, which kicked off in the spring, began airing in April on WISC-TV3 and UPN-14 reaching 23 Wisconsin counties.

"Dan went 'above and beyond' providing free legal help to anyone who asked," says Adams County Corporation Counsel Cindy Haro. "I called Dan, who is the Adams County Bar Association president, to see if the bar could be of any assistance, and he did not hesitate. Dan set aside his practice and set up a table in the town hall to answer questions."

"Dan Wood's actions are the essence of the State Bar's branding initiative," says Public Image Committee Chair Kevin Palmersheim. "His actions show how attorneys deliver the three key qualities the public values most about lawyers - expert advice, problem-solving skills, and community service. His actions demonstrate that when lawyers see a need in their community they respond. That's what our public outreach efforts are about ... educating the public about the value lawyers bring to their communities."

Past TV spots highlighted Troy Mayne, Madison, for his work with Habitat for Humanity; Lance Grady, Waukesha, and Dean Richards, Delafield, for their efforts on their local fire department and a search and rescue dive team; Beth Roney Drennan, Baraboo, for providing legal assistance in family law, child support, and domestic abuse matters to poor families who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, and John Mitby, Madison, for volunteering his time and his knowledge to make the Reddan Soccer Park in Verona, Wis. a reality for thousands of children.
