50 Years in the Law: Celebrating Wisconsin Lawyers Admitted in 1976

The State Bar celebrates the lawyers admitted to practice in Wisconsin in 1976, honoring a half-century of work across every corner of the profession. Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Jill Karofsky praised their enduring service to clients, courts, communities, and the people of Wisconsin.

May 20, 2026 – In 1976, the United States celebrated its bicentennial. In California, the Apple Computer Company was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The Winter Olympics took place in Innsbruck, and the Summer Games in Montreal. Jimmy Carter won the November election. In March, a massive ice storm hit southern Wisconsin, and 21 counties were declared federal disaster areas. Rocky was the top-grossing movie; "Silly Love Songs" by Wings was the top song.

And the 229 lawyers listed below were among those admitted to practice in Wisconsin. This year, the State Bar of Wisconsin celebrates the lawyers admitted to practice in Wisconsin in 1976, reaching their 50-year milestone as Wisconsin lawyers. Together, we honor their years of practice and many achievements.

Many of these 50-year members gathered with State Bar leaders and received congratulations from Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Jill Karofsky at a celebration luncheon May 13 in Delafield.

The past 50 years have seen a lot of change within the practice of law, said Chief Justice Karofsky – just with technology alone. “But through all of that change, the central work of a lawyer has remained the same.”

Two 50-year members, from left: Hon. James Morrison and Sharon Gallagher.

“Lawyers help people solve problems. Lawyers give structure to disagreement. Lawyers turn conflict into process. Lawyers stand between the individual and the power of the state. Lawyers protect rights, explain obligations, and help people navigate institutions that can be overwhelming.”

Their careers involved all aspects of legal practice. “However your path unfolded, today is an opportunity to recognize not just longevity, but contribution,” she said, because “50 years in the State Bar is a measure of commitment.”

    “That is certainly worth celebrating.”

Chief Justice Karofsky also recognized one of these 50-year members, former Chief Justice Ann Walsh Bradley. “Justice Bradley is my mentor, my colleague, and my dear friend. … In her 30 years of service, every minute on the court, she was the conscience of the court.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Jill Karofsky gives remarks at the celebration event on May 13, 2026.

“Today is not just a recognition of longevity. It is a celebration of lives spent doing work that matters, in communities across Wisconsin, for people who needed your judgment, your skill, and your steady hand,” the Chief Justice told the 50-year members.

“Thank you for your service to the courts. Thank you for your service to the profession. Thank you for your service to the people of Wisconsin,” she said.
