Give Back and Grow: Serve on a State Bar Committee

Serving on a State Bar committee offers professional growth and meaningful service – connect with colleagues, contribute to policy, and give back to a profession that matters.

    By Stephen W. Sawyer

Feb. 18, 2026 – The State Bar of Wisconsin needs dedicated legal professionals willing to put their stamp on the legal system and the practice of law in our great state.

Stephen W. SawyerStephen W. Sawyer, Notre Dame 1996, is the principal of Sawyer Law LLC in Stevens Point. He is president-elect of the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Volunteering to serve on a State Bar committee allows attorneys to improve the legal profession, influence policy, and expand professional networks across the state. It offers opportunities to directly shape our legal system, to develop your leadership skills within the legal community, and to experience the pride of knowing that you have served your fellow bar members and every person who calls Wisconsin and this country home.

Below are some key reasons to volunteer.

    Professional Development and Networking

Volunteering to work on a State Bar committee allows you to connect with colleagues from across Wisconsin (and beyond our borders) and build lasting relationships with attorneys with varied backgrounds and interests. This work gives you an opportunity to share your perspectives and gain new insights as you exchange ideas with other dedicated professionals. Attorneys with whom you share committee duties can also help you to grow your business and expand the scope of your practice.

    Influence and Advocacy

The work done in State Bar committees helps to shape policies, rules, and legislation affecting the legal profession. Your efforts will improve the efficiency of our courts, increase the quality of our members’ legal work, and expand rural access to qualified attorneys in Wisconsin. The improvements championed by these committees move us ever closer to the ideals of fairness and justice for all in our state and our country.

    Career Growth

While promoting justice and equality by serving on a State Bar committee, you will also be enhancing your profile as a leader within the legal community. Involvement with the work of the State Bar signals to other attorneys and potential clients that you take an active role in shaping the law and are worthy of their trust as an accomplished professional.

    Giving Back

Being a lawyer provides a challenging and rewarding career to those with the intelligence, focus, and drive to make law their life’s work. Please give back to this profession that gives so much to each one of us. Take pride in this path that you have chosen and help us to make this path even more fulfilling. Volunteer.
