Nov. 7, 2018 – Fewer people write checks. More people, especially younger generations, want the option to pay bills online. The legal industry is not immune from consumer preferences. Thus, law firms should allow clients to pay bills online.
“That’s the trend we are seeing,” said Shannon Yocum of LawPay, an online payment solution for lawyers and law firms. Yocum was part of a Ted-talk style panel discussing the future of law practice at the recent Wisconsin Solo and Small Firm Conference.
“The feedback we are getting from our current law firms is that they have a lot of clients that don’t request to pay with a check. They want to be able to pay with a debit or credit card online. That’s the direction we are encouraging our law firms to go.”
LawPay, which is an affinity partner of the State Bar of Wisconsin, is a merchant card processing system that allows law firms to take online payments securely.
Through LawPay, the law firm can simply email the client a payment link, which takes the client to a payment page. Law firms can also attach the payment option to the law firm’s website to accept debit and credit card payments through the website.
Since LawPay is focused on the legal industry, it is aware of rules relating to trust accounts. Payments flow separately into general and trust accounts according to the law firm’s direction, and LawPay fees are debited from the general account only.
