CLE Reporting: Admitted to Practice Law in an Odd-Numbered Year? Deadlines Approaching

Nov. 18, 2015 – Admitted to practice law in an odd-numbered year? If so, you probably received your packet from the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners (BBE), which explains that continuing legal education (CLE) credits must be completed and reported soon.

Specifically, those who wish to maintain an active law license in Wisconsin must complete the CLE credits by Jan. 31, 2016, and file their CLE report no later than Feb. 1, 2016. Failing to do so will result in late fees and other potential penalties.

Active status lawyers’ need 30 credits (hours) every two-year reporting period, with a minimum of three credits in legal ethics and professional responsibility.

Lawyers may earn a maximum of 10 “on demand” credits per reporting period, but ethics credits cannot be earned on-demand. On-demand courses are pre-approved CLE courses viewable online. Lawyers can also get up to 15 credits for certain “published legal writings,” including writings published in electronic formats.

    Filing the CLE Report

Paper filing is still permitted, but the BBE is encouraging attorneys to consider electronically filing their CLE reports (see instructions for filing CLE reports). Attorneys can find all forms and related information on the BBE’s CLE reporting page.

Attorneys should note that “myCLE Tracker” is a State Bar of Wisconsin product that allows attorneys to keep track of their CLE attendance. However, it does not report CLE requirements to the BBE and cannot be used in lieu of a report to the BBE.
