Feb. 5, 2014 – Do you have questions about the changed landscape of legal fees? Do you have questions about your duties to various categories of nonclients under the Rules of Professional Conduct? The next State Bar Practice411™ Breakfast & Business: Eggs, Ethics, and Answers program on Feb. 28 in West Bend focuses on these issues. The series goes to Eau Claire on April 4 and Madison on May 23.
First Session – Don’t Be Afraid of Alternative Billing: Establishing Value-base Services Through Fees, Alternative Fee Arrangements and Billing
Learn about the changing landscape of legal fees. Clients have more choices than ever before from competing lawyers and nonlawyer legal service providers. Alternative fee arrangements are gaining popularity, helping lawyers meet the challenges of the changing legal environment while delivering value and quality service to their clients. This session, presented by Nerino Petro, State Bar practice management advisor, addresses:
The ethical rules regarding establishing your fees and the factors to be considered
How the Wisconsin Rules of Professional Conduct are affected by using different alternative fee arrangements
How clients perceive value for legal services
Understanding value and how to determine alternative fees
Using technology to improve effectiveness, efficiency, and value
Implementing alternative fee arrangements
Petro has 14 years of solo legal practice experience and 12 years as CEO of CenCom Legal Technologies, which he founded to help lawyers and their staff deal with the practice management issues facing them.
Second Session – A Smorgasbord: The OLR and You; Your Duties to Nonclients; War Stories
This session begins with an interactive discussion of lawyer regulation procedures, facts and figures. Presenter, Bill Weigel, litigation counsel, Office of Lawyer Regulation, also will provide guidance and reference about disciplinary cases relating to a lawyer's duties to various categories of nonclients. Weigel will devote the final third of the session to some recent entertaining attorney and judicial misconduct cases.
Weigel has served as BAPR (now OLR) litigation counsel for more than 17 years. He assigns and supervises the litigation of all Wisconsin disciplinary, incapacity, reinstatement, and appellate cases for OLR. Weigel was a private practice trial attorney in Milwaukee for 12 years.
