May 15, 2013 – The State Bar Practice411 Breakfast & Business: Eggs, Ethics, and Answers June 5 program in Green Bay is a two-sesssion program that focuses on technology and malpractice issues. Presenters are State Bar Practice Management Advisor Nerino Petro and WILMIC Senior Vice President Tom Watson.

First Session – What Lawyers Need to Know About Technology in Their Office Today and Tomorrow

Technology is a fact of life for lawyers and the pace of technological change continues to increase. From issues such as metadata and redaction to backup and securing your information to social networking and cloud storage, what are the challenges that face Wisconsin lawyers not only today but tomorrow? This session addresses everyday ethical concerns when it comes to lawyers’ use of technology in their practice.

This session covers a wide range of topics all of which directly relate to your use of technology in your practice while complying with your ethical obligations under the Supreme Court Rules of Professional Conduct.

Petro has 14 years of solo legal practice experience, and 12 years as CEO of CenCom Legal Technologies, which he founded to help lawyers and their staff deal with the practice management issues facing them.

Second Session – Avoiding the ‘M’ Word: Managing Malpractice Risks – Common Pitfalls in Law Practice

Topics covered in this program include missed deadlines, difficult attorney-client relationships, flawed office procedures, suing for fees, and other potentially risky practice situations as well as the riskiest areas of practice.  The presentation examines some of the common mistakes lawyers make and ways to avoid them, with a particular emphasis on disaster recovery planning and limited scope representation (sometimes called unbundled legal services).

Thomas J. Watson is Senior Vice President and Director of Communications, Marketing & Risk Management at Wisconsin Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company (WILMIC).  A 2002 graduate of Marquette University Law School, following law school Watson was in private practice in Madison, focusing primarily on Family Law before joining Wisconsin Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company in 2005.
