Tell Me a Little About Yourself

Job interviews can be a lot like first dates. You obsess about what to wear, you’re afraid of making a fool of yourself, and they generally fall into one of three categories: intimidating, exciting, or awkward. They also come with a rather standard set of questions to answer along with acceptable (and unacceptable) topics of conversation.

On a first date, you aren’t trying to answer all the questions correctly just so they will like you. You also want to discover if you like them. You want to find out if you make a good match for each other, and that’s what an effective job interview will help determine.

Here are some suggestions for making your next job interview (and maybe your next date) more successful.

Show your enthusiasm. One of the best ways to show your interest is to do your research. Browsing the firm website for five minutes while you wait in the lobby is not enough. Show that you have taken the time to understand the types of cases they take and who their competitors are. If you know someone who works there, talk with them about the organization ahead of time. If you are interviewing for a promotion, make sure you have a solid grasp of the position’s role in the organization.

Dress like you belong. Notice that we didn’t say, “Dress to impress.” While you want to look professional, dressing to impress can sometimes send a signal you didn’t intend (showy, aggressive, out of touch, etc.). In the legal profession, conservative business attire is the best default, but the best-case scenario is to find out how the employees dress and do the same. Then, when the recruiter or hiring manager/partner looks at you, they see someone who will fit into the company culture.

Be an active participant. Imagine a first date where one person just asked questions and the other only provided answers. This type of exchange doesn’t give you the chance to learn about each other. While many interviewers will save time for questions at the end, ask relevant questions as the topics come up, making it less like an interrogation and more like a conversation.

Tell stories to reinforce your qualifications. Don’t feel the need to repeat everything on your resume, but be prepared to provide examples that support the information listed. Instead of saying you are “detailed oriented,” share a time when your attention to detail aided you in practice or law school.

Don’t trash your ex. It never makes you look good to talk badly about a former employer. It raises an immediate red flag, and interviewers can’t help but wonder if you’ll be telling a similar story about their company in a couple of years.

Be honest. It’s tempting to make something up or embellish accomplishments to seem more important or exciting. While this strategy might get you further initially, eventually the truth will come out.

Take the time to prepare. The best way to combat the anxiety that comes with an interview is to be ready for it. Look at common interview questions, and think about how you can answer them in a way that not only shows your skills, but also relates to the job and the organization. You are less likely to be caught off guard, which should help you relax as the interview progresses.

Following these general guidelines can help you find your perfect career match. (They might even help you land that second date!) Find more interview tips and common law firm interview questions from these helpful resources.

http://amc.wisbar.org/">Annual Meeting & Conference only two weeks away, here are a few tips to make any conference experience more successful and fun.

Get social – Join the conference’s Facebook page or LinkedIn group, find the event’s Twitter hashtag, and start connecting with other attendees. For AMC, use the Twitter hashtag #SBWamc.

Determine your goals – While at the conference, will your focus be on networking? Learning? Finding fodder for blog posts? Knowing your priorities can help you decide which sessions and events to attend.

Don’t hide – Look up from your smartphone or tablet. Putting away your technology makes you look approachable and improves your chances of striking up a conversation during breaks or while waiting for a session to start.

Remember the essentials – Pack your phone, tablet, and laptop chargers where they’re easy to grab as you travel. And be sure to bring enough business cards.

Follow up – Keep the relationships you built during the conference alive. Send invitations to connect on LinkedIn or short, personalized emails.

Haven’t registered for AMC yet? You can pre-register through June 13, and walk-in registrations are also welcome.
