Thank you for your understanding.</p> <hr> <h3 style="color: #0f319f; margin-bottom: 7px;"><img width="175 " src="http://images.wisbar.org/Images/DigestEmails/bulb_225.jpg" alt="" align="right">Everyday Innovation </h3><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Companies love to tout that they foster a “culture of innovation.” But what does that mean and does it really make a difference? </p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Office culture isn’t suddenly innovative because you filled your conference rooms with white boards, sticky notes, and beanbag chairs. You define your office culture each day by the types of activities and behaviors that are recognized and rewarded – or called out and disciplined. If you want innovation to be a core part of your practice, here are some ideas to consider: </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>Innovate strategically.</strong> Telling people to “be innovative” is about as generic as it gets. It’s too broad a message to be effective. If you explore all the new ideas people have without relating them to your business goals, you’re going to waste time and resources. Instead, approach innovation with an end goal in mind or a specific problem to solve. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>Reward innovation … and accept failure.</strong> Lawyers are often incentivized to bill more hours, clear more cases, and bring in new clients. Bonuses and promotions are based on these traditional structures. If your employees know the types of activities that’ll be rewarded, those are the activities they’ll pursue. Until firms and organizations start rewarding innovation in a similar manner, there’ll be no real charge to innovate. Likewise, if employees see risk-takers constantly disciplined or passed over for promotions, they’ll avoid taking similar risks themselves. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>Don’t ignore the small stuff.</strong> Not every innovation revolutionizes an industry. Oftentimes, innovations simply speed up processes, improve accuracy, or create a better client experience. Make sure to look for these smaller opportunities where innovation can improve your practice. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>Embrace the fear.</strong> Try doing one thing every day that scares you. Now we’re not advocating that you take up a dangerous hobby, but step outside your normal day-to-day activities and try something new. Do something different. Learn something.
