With more than 74 million baby boomers<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">2</sup> in the U.S. – many of whom may be your clients and colleagues – let’s take a look at how they affect the workplace. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>1. More than 40 percent of Boomers have stayed with an employer for more than 20 years</strong>.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">3</sup> These individuals often possess a vast amount of organizational knowledge, so make use of it. Baby Boomers make great mentors. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>2. Baby Boomers tend to be very process oriented.</strong> They grew up in homes that were very disciplined. Providing structured processes and written job performance expectations will help them meet their goals. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>3. Contrary to popular belief, Boomers do not have an aversion to technology.</strong> Baby Boomers have seen technological breakthroughs like ATMs, personal computers, and cell phones. But those technologies developed slowly and came with user manuals, giving Boomers time to learn them. Back then, user manuals were just as important as the product itself. Today, technology changes much more rapidly and user manuals are seen as an afterthought. Baby Boomers can work with new advances, they just might need a little more training and guidance. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><strong>4. Baby Boomers produced a tremendous amount of work before video conferencing and the option to work remotely.</strong> Almost all work was done in teams. When Boomers see younger generations work remotely and independently, they might feel the project is not getting the attention it deserves. Providing frequent status updates and demonstrating collaborative efforts can help Boomers feel better about the work produced. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Every generation is made up of individuals, meaning generational tendencies don’t apply to everyone. However, if you’re running into issues with someone from a specific generation, stop and think about whether addressing generational differences might improve the situation.
