In the last 200 years, lawyers have made an impressive impact on politics, with more than half of all presidents, vice presidents, and members of Congress boasting a background in law.1

However, that number has sharply declined in recent decades. Today, only one out of every 6,000 lawyers is a current member of Congress – that’s a 95-percent drop from a century ago.2 Lawyers in public office are becoming less plentiful, but they are ideally suited for political roles because of skill and experience in such areas as:

Working with a broad spectrum of people

Analyzing complex issues and developing solutions

Delivering persuasive rhetoric

Influencing and negotiating

Presenting reasoned arguments

Staying calm under pressure

Find out what it takes to be both a lawyer and a politician in a special CLE session at the 2018 <a href="

Hear from attorneys who currently serve or have served in public offices as they share guidance on:

The basics of running for office as a practicing attorney

Ethical considerations for fundraising

Attorney-client conflicts of interest

What you can expect if elected

The transition to elected official

The commitment it takes to campaign and serve

How to balance a practice while campaigning or holding office

Younger generations are not buying homes or having children as early as they once were.3,4 But that doesn’t mean there aren’t people depending on them. Term life insurance should still be important to younger lawyers. While most student loans secured though the federal government are relieved after death, other loans are not. Parents or a surviving spouse would be responsible for covering those debts.

The State Bar can help. For a limited time, State Bar of Wisconsin members may be eligible for $50,000 of term life insurance. Qualifying members must be age 40 or under and not currently insured under the State Bar’s plan.

No insurance representative will come knocking on your door, and you won’t need a health exam. Just fill out a form and acceptance is guaranteed. The plan has a portability feature that allows you to keep your coverage even if you change jobs, as long as you remain a State Bar member.

http://images.wisbar.org/Images/DigestEmails/SayingNo_175w.jpg" alt="" width="150" align="right"/>Just Say No Once in Awhile

Messages regarding time management often focus on how to increase your productivity so you can complete more tasks in less time. Rarely do these messages look at one of the most effective time management strategies – saying no.

Learning when and how to say no can be difficult, so use this guide to get started.

Recognize that when you say yes to something, you are saying no to something else. What will you be unable to do if you say yes to a new task?

If you can’t say no completely, say no for right now. Explain that you will be unable to work on the project, discuss the issue, etc. until later in the day/week/month.

Remember that earlier refusal is better than later regrets. If you wait too long to say no, you can get in over your head and all your efforts suffer.

Here are some examples of tactful refusals you can modify for your own practice:

I will start it next week and deliver something to you by the end of the month.

I will not be able to start on this until next Wednesday at the earliest. Would you like me to suggest someone else to assist you? Or would you like to wait until I have time to handle it personally?

Let me call you back tomorrow morning when I can give your concerns the attention they deserve.

Now, get out there and start turning people down!
