<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 7px;">Fast food restaurants know what they’re doing. In 2014, the U.S. quick-service restaurant industry boasted revenue of $198.9 billion.<sup style="line-height: 0; font-size: 12px;">1</sup> While you’re not selling Happy Meals<sup style="line-height: 0; font-size: 12px;">®</sup> or Butterburgers<sup style="line-height: 0; font-size: 12px;">®</sup>, there are still some business strategies from the fast food industry that could benefit your practice.</p>
<ol style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 7px;"><li><strong>Adapt to customers’ changing tastes. </strong>McDonalds went from asking, “do you want to supersize that?” to adding salads and wraps to their menu. That 180-degree change happened for a reason. It was what the customers wanted. Customers decide your fate. Remember that and adapt accordingly (and quickly). </li>
<li><strong>Keep your customers coming back.</strong> One of the key indicators of success in the fast food industry is the “intent to visit again” score.<sup style="line-height: 0; font-size: 12px;">2</sup> Although not everyone may be overly satisfied with their experience at McDonalds, the burger joint nonetheless enjoys among the highest “intent to visit again" scores. That keeps revenue flowing. Do your clients <u><em>want</em></u> to visit you again? We aren’t saying you have to have a full-fledged market research team, but ensure you’re doing everything possible to make your clients want to come back. </li>
<li><strong>Reward loyalty.</strong> Loyalty punch cards probably won’t work for your law office. But make sure your return clients understand how much they’re appreciated and reward them. Yes, you can give gifts to your clients. Just be mindful of <a href="https://www.wicourts.gov/sc/scrule/DisplayDocument.html?content=html&seqNo=45322#Conflict">SCR 20:1.8(e)</a>, which prohibits providing financial assistance to a client in connection with pending or contemplated litigation. </li>
<li><strong>Invest in efficiency.</strong> Point-of-sale (POS) solutions account for the largest chunk — a full 33% — of all restaurant technology investments.<sup style="line-height: 0; font-size: 12px;">3</sup> You don’t have to spend millions on your accounting and billing software, but take a look at your process. Is it efficient? Are missed billing items slipping through the cracks? Are you making it easy for clients to pay? Where is lack of technology impeding on your bottom line? </li>
<li><strong>Have a special sauce.</strong> From Chick-fil-A Sauce to Big Mac Sauce, having something unique to offer customers sets chains apart. Identify what it is that makes your practice stand out. If you don’t know, your clients won’t either.</li>
</ol>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 7px;">Inspiration for improving your practice can come from even the most seemingly unrelated of places. Next time you make a stop at a fast food restaurant, see if there are other elements of the experience you can add to your business model. But, you might want to think twice about installing that drive-through window. </p>
