We hear about the value of diversity in business all the time – and with good reason. Companies with high levels of gender and ethnic diversity financially outperform others by up to 35 percent.1

However, diversity is far easier said than done. A 2016 Law360 survey found about 85 percent of attorneys are white.2 Another recent survey looking at 11 major industries found law firms are perceived to have the lowest commitment to diversity in hiring and retention.3 Ouch.

Diversity is worth working towards because it pays off. Diverse workforces:4

Increase innovation and performance

Improve creativity in solving problems

Attract more top talent to the company

Reduce employee turnover

Capture more market share among diverse audiences

So how can you make your firm more diverse, inclusive, and tolerant? It requires work across the spectrum—from hiring practices to cultural shifts within your organization.

Although every firm has unique resources and needs, successful diversity initiatives tend to include these core components.

Support from upper management: Start by helping your firm’s leaders understand diversity’s importance. Then ask them to back diversity and assist in putting diversity initiatives into action.

Assessment: Before you can set goals for the future, you need to know where you are today. Review your existing policies through the lens of diversity and inclusion. Conduct employee focus groups or surveys to identify diversity challenges in your firm and ask for possible solutions.

Voluntary diversity training: Offering diversity training to everyone in your firm can help people understand the business rationale behind emphasizing diversity. It also empowers employees to identify and respond appropriately to discriminatory behavior. At voluntary training, participants can show their commitment to the company’s goals – and they’re even more receptive to training messages.

Clear goals: The more specific your targets, the better. “Increasing diversity” is probably too vague to be successful. But “increasing the proportion of women in senior roles by 20% by 2019” gives you something concrete to aim for.

Mentoring: Mentoring programs that actively match participants across genders, races, and ages tend to significantly improve workplace and managerial diversity.5 That’s because mentorship enhances employee retention and gives employees the support they need to climb the ladder of authority.

Targeted recruiting: Making a conscious effort to go after diverse candidates sets the stage for greater diversity among employees and managers over time. As more candidates with varied backgrounds are hired, your firm can attract even more diverse future employees – who can go on to become diverse managers.

Regular review: Proactively revisit your diversity program at set times throughout the year. How is diversity training going? Are there new processes that don’t fit with your culture of inclusion? Reviews show your firm’s continued commitment to diversity and give employees a chance to provide additional input.

Diversity manager: Appoint someone who will monitor and enforce your firm’s diversity and inclusion standards. This person can also spearhead reviews of your diversity
initiative.

For more help and insights on increasing diversity in your firm, the State Bar’s 2017 Diversity Counsel Program is a smart place to start. Find guidance for launching a diversity program at your firm or improving an existing one. Plus, hear practical, straightforward advice from judges and lawyers as they share their strategies for becoming more diverse and inclusive.

Another great way to grow your firm’s diversity is by participating in the State Bar’s Diversity Clerkship Program. Provide a paid summer clerkship to a law student from a diverse background. You’ll not only receive valuable legal help, but also build a solid relationship with a
potential future employee.

In addition, you can learn more about diversity in the workplace here:

What do you think of when you hear “diversity”? Many of us may picture different skin colors. But diversity goes so much deeper.

People can differ outwardly based on:

Gender

Age

Physical abilities

Race

Ethnicity

And in other ways, such as:

Education

Religious beliefs

Sexual orientation

Socio-economic status

All types of diversity are valuable because they give people unique viewpoints and experiences. This, in turn, means they bring varied ideas and approaches that can enhance their teams and their companies as a whole.

So the next time you think of diversity, remember that it can take many forms – all of which can benefit your firm.

Governor Dodge Signs
Wisconsin’s First Law

Territorial Governor Henry Dodge signed the first law passed by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature. The law outlined the civil nature of discourse amongst the legislators and between legislators and their fellow citizens.

It allowed for the fining or imprisonment of citizens guilty of “disrespect, disorderly or contemptuous behavior, threats in the legislature or interference with witnesses to the legislature.” It also allowed each house to expel their own members with a two-thirds majority.

While well intentioned, this law did little to stop unruly behavior in the legislature. Members were known to engage in raucous arguments, physical fights, and, on one occasion, even a fatal shooting.

With the recent devastation that has occurred from hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is hiring temporary employees to assist with disaster relief efforts. Those with legal skills are among those needed, including lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants.

The legal positions involve speaking with borrowers, preparing and closing legal documents, and validating deeds and collateral. Training is provided by SBA staff.

The jobs are available through Dec. 31, 2017, and are located at processing centers in Sacramento, California; Dallas, Texas; and Buffalo, New York. Wisconsin lawyers do not need to be licensed in California, Texas, or New York to fill the positions.

Compensation is based on each individual’s qualifications, skillsets, responsibility, hours, and location.
