You’ve spent the better part of two days meeting fantastic potential clients or referral buddies at a conference. Now what? The party may be over, but don’t lose momentum after you schmooze. Here’s some advice to help you build effective contacts.

Clean up: Did you end up with two business cards in your shirt pocket, one in your coat, and three in your glove compartment? Use an app like Evernote to capture them with your camera or add them to your CRM. Whatever you do, have a system to capture those contact details electronically. It’s hard to build relationships when you don’t have easy access to their information.

Make the time: Connect with the people you met within 48 hours. From now on, any potential networking event gets two appointments on your calendar – one for the actual event and one the next day for follow-up. Don’t make your new contacts feel like afterthoughts. Waiting a week shows you aren’t really interested in building the relationship.

Understand: You wouldn’t go into a job interview not knowing anything about the company. It’s the same with networking. Research each person’s business. Think you know the company already? Research it again and find something unique to chat about in future conversations. Show you care.

Follow up: It doesn’t really matter how, as long as it’s genuine. A quick email, a handwritten note, or connecting on social media is the usual way to go. However, don’t be so “usual” that you fall back on tired, standardized templates. Take the time to stand out from the crowd of lazy networkers who use the “Please add me to your LinkedIn network” default message. Add something to let them know you are personable, thoughtful, and that you want to build a relationship. See a pattern here?

Offer something: Did you suggest to meet for coffee when you were at the conference? Then follow up and include a useful bit of information such as a white paper or article about one of the CLE programs you attended. It doesn’t even need to be business related. Did you end up discussing the search for a new home at a cocktail reception? Send over the name of a great realtor or a checklist for homebuyers.

Continue making a favorable and lasting impression on people you meet with the Consumer Pamphlets Series.

The Consumer Pamphlets Series is a collection of pamphlets covering the basics of 19 legal topics – everything from bankruptcy to wills and estate planning. Each pamphlet answers common legal questions in easy-to-understand terms while encouraging the reader to contact a lawyer like you for further help.

Consumer pamphlets make great leave-behinds after a speech to a local community group. They’re also perfect for distributing at libraries, clubs, community centers, churches, and other organizations. You can even send them to new networking contacts as follow-up communication (see “Some Schooling on Schmoozing After a Conference” above).

Plus, by using the space provided on each pamphlet to add your firm’s contact information, people will know exactly who to call when they have a legal question.
Logical Witnesses

One dark night, there was a hit-and-run in which a car struck a pedestrian. A police officer at the scene said the car was going very fast. Six bystanders saw the accident, but their reports were contradictory.

Witness 1: Saw a woman driving a green car.

Witness 2: Saw the headlights off as the car moved at a high speed.

Witness 3: Saw a car that wasn’t going fast at all and noticed the license plates.

Witness 4: Saw a Toyota with its headlights switched off.

Witness 5: Saw a man driving a car that did not have license plates.

Witness 6: Saw a gray Chevy.

Police found the driver and the vehicle and discovered that only one of the six eyewitnesses gave a completely correct report. Everyone else provided one piece of information that was true and another that was false. With that in mind, answer the following questions:

What was the brand of the car?

What color was it?

Was it going quickly or slowly?

Were there license plates?

Were the headlights on?

Was the driver a woman?
