We’ve all been there. Someone approaches you, starts talking to you, and knows your name. While the face is familiar, the name escapes you. For some frustrating reason, you seem to have a hard time remembering names.

The reason, according to some research, is that, unlike other words, proper names don’t reveal identifying information. Here’s an example. If you were told to walk into a room full of furniture and sit on the “couch,” you would know what to look for, even if you didn’t know the exact color or style of couch in the room.

Conversely, if you were told to walk into a room full of strangers and find “Jim” or “Susan,” you would have a much tougher time. The names “Jim” and “Susan” don’t give you specific identifying information about the individuals. You might be able to discern gender accurately, but as Shel Silverstein wrote and Johnny Cash sang, you may not always get that
right.

So, if science says names are inherently difficult to remember, what can you do?

Make the choice to remember. It sounds silly, but finding the motivation to remember people’s names is really the first step to remembering them. The next time you go to an event where you’ll be meeting new people, make it a goal to remember the names of everyone you meet. You can even set a personal reward as motivation.

Repeat the name. This can be as simple as, “It’s nice to meet you, ________.” Or, “Where do you work, ________?” Don’t use the person’s name every time you address them (that’s creepy), but try to use it once in the beginning of the conversation, a time or two more throughout, and once again when you say goodbye.

Listen to the person talking. Many times when meeting new people, we’re so focused on maintaining conversation that we’re constantly thinking ahead to our next comment or reply. Employing active listening skills when
meeting someone helps you learn more about them and make a stronger connection between the name, the person talking, and information they’re sharing with you.

Associate names with visuals. These can be any visuals that come to you as you hear their names – maybe it’s a rhyme, another object that sounds similar to the name, or an alliteration. The visuals could also be prominent physical features or activities the person enjoys. Using our names from above, for Susan you could visualize “Susan Smiles a Lot” or “A Black-Eyed Susan Flower” and Jim might be “Jim Likes the Gym” or “Gemstone.” You’re basically creating a visual, secret nickname for someone that you’ll remember later.

Write it down. Collecting business cards is great, but it also helps to write on the card something about the person you just met to help you remember them. Maybe it’s a physical description, their children’s names, where they went to school, or anything else you learned that will help you identify them again.

Review. At the end of the event or the end of the day, go through the people you’ve met and say their names. By reviewing their names this way, it helps to move that information from short-term to long-term memory. If you meet your goal of remembering all the names, don’t forget that reward you promised yourself!

Mornings often work well, allowing you to get it done before you get into other projects.

Focus on efforts that offer the best chance of success. Know who your best prospects are and concentrate on them.

Make action a priority. When you think about doing something, either do it immediately or schedule time to do it.

Leverage your resources—both people and technology. Delegate when you can. Understand what you need to do and what you can let others do. This will help you find time to focus on business development. Strengthen your relationships by sharing valuable information with prospects on social media and through email.

Keep efforts organized. Keep all of your contacts, leads, and activities in one place. Take detailed notes of your discussions. Determine your next step with each prospect.
