With the 2017 Wisconsin Solo and Small Conference next week, now is the perfect time to explore some ways to help you succeed at your next conference. With some help from Harvard Business Review’s How to Get the Most Out of a Conference by Rebecca Knight, we’ll look at how to prepare for, things to do while at, and actions to take after a conference.

Before You Attend

Adjust your attitude. Many of us have a negative reaction to “networking.” To overcome these feelings, focus on your professional aspirations. These new connections can help you grow both professionally and personally.

Introduce yourself. As you review the schedule, identify speakers you would like to meet while there. Reach out to them beforehand through email, a mutual acquaintance, or social media. Let them know you’re excited to attend their session. Does the event have a Facebook page or LinkedIn group? Get active and talk about what sessions you look forward to attending.

Pack with purpose. Remember to bring enough business cards. Conferences are the one place where you can’t have too many
business cards. Don’t forget your charging cords! Remember you’ll need them for your laptop, your phone, and your tablet. And before you leave the office, prepare a stamped envelope with your office address on it (we’ll get to that later).

At the Conference

Set your own terms. If the crowds at a conference make you uncomfortable, look for the other opportunities for making connections. WSSFC 2017 is sponsoring dine-arounds this year, which will allow you to meet with a smaller group of 8-10 people at a local restaurant. If you’re a first-time attendee, look for other first timers. They usually have a sticker, ribbon, or specially colored nametag. Many of these folks will be in the same boat and looking for their first connection.

Two eyes, two ears, one mouth. This old saying is
a helpful reminder not to dominate a conversation and to let others engage. Often, you gain as much value and knowledge between the presentations as you do during the presentations. Be ready to ask thoughtful questions and have conversation starters ready, such as what session they’re excited about, which sessions they liked the best so far, and what they’re hoping to get from the conference.

During the sessions. When you attend your first presentation, take one sheet of paper for jotting down things you want to try when you get back to the office. (Hint: this means hand-write them). Use this same piece of paper in every session – adding to it from each session (be sure to title each session so you can go back to your notes or contact the speaker later if necessary).

Before you leave. Before you leave for home, fold up your paper of things to try in your office, stick it in the self-addressed, stamped envelope you prepared before you left home, and mail it from the front desk.

After the Conference

Implement. Often, the task of catching up distracts us from implementing changes when we get back to the office. When your letter arrives a few days later, select the ideas you’d like to try first and begin planning for their implementation.

Follow up. Remember to do something with all the contact information you received. Whether it’s sending a quick message telling them how much you enjoyed meeting them, or adding them to your LinkedIn and Facebook circles, be sure to close the loop with the connections you made.

For additional advice on getting the most from your next conference, check out these resources:

Our third installment focuses on how you can use video to help build your firm’s brand awareness online. The question many lawyers have when it comes to online video is: what should the content of these videos be? Here are a few ways to use video in promoting your practice.

Testimonials. Film actual clients stating their personal experiences with your firm. Potential clients find these videos persuasive because they can see someone else who has experienced what they’re going through and how you helped.

Informational. Create short videos on specific legal topics. It’s your chance to demonstrate your expertise while building a personal connection. Try answering commonly asked questions you receive from potential clients during a prospect call.

Webinars. Produce an informative workshop on a specific topic. Topics could include recent changes to the law, the process clients need to follow when filing, or common misconceptions about the legal process. Webinars can be recorded and shared in smaller snippets across social media in addition to posting them to your firm’s website.
