This second installment of Business Development Doesn’t Have to Be a Mystery highlights activities that solo practitioners and lawyers in a small firm can take to ramp up their game. Again, these tips translate well for lawyers in any size firm or practice setting.

Write it down. Write a simple description of your practice to potential clients (think postcard or flyer). Remember to focus on the benefits you bring to clients – not your amazing résumé. For help, see Teddy Snyder’s Feature versus Benefit article.

Get comfortable with social media. Take that description you’ve developed in #1, and use it on your website bio and your LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter profiles. If you don’t have these, get them. Then get active. Share content (things like articles, papers, or opinions) that demonstrate what you know, who you are, and what you can do.

Join a group. (See #3 in the first installment of the series).

Stay connected. Now that you’re
collecting contact information (things like business cards and LinkedIn invites), create a system to track the information.
The system can be simple or more sophisticated. The important thing is that you can use it easily.

Get out! Meet at least once a week with a potential client or referral source. This could be for coffee or lunch, a drink after work, or a social activity. Not sure who to call? See numbers 3 and 4 above!

Cultivating a network of potential clients and referral sources doesn’t have to be difficult. Any activity you pursue should weave naturally into your own interests and those of your practice.

Mentorship Program Deadline Approaching

Are you a newer lawyer looking for some experienced guidance? Are you a seasoned practitioner with advice to share? Then the Ready.Set.Practice. mentoring program needs you!

Now in its third year, Ready.Set.Practice. matches a lawyer having six or more years of experience with new lawyers practicing for five years or less – or 3L law students. Mentor-mentee partners in this year-long program receive training and then go on to complete at least 10 activities together as outlined in the program’s handbook. For example, you and your partner might choose to:

Tour the local courthouse and meet judges and court personnel

Have a discussion about ethics and malpractice insurance

Review how to recognize conflicts of interest and share tips for maintaining strong client relations

Experience the many benefits of being a mentor or mentee. The application deadline to participate in Ready.Set.Practice. in 2018 is November 17. To apply, contact Julie Wills at <a href="
