Working a room, networking, schmoozing. These words often bring to mind images of unpleasant experiences (or people). You suffer through awkward social events in the hopes of finding one or two people that may prove to be “useful” to you and your practice in the future. But, what happens when you think about networking in a different way?

Keith Ferrazzi’s book, Never Eat Alone and Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time introduces you to a form of networking that takes a human approach to build your personal network. The key is to focus on how you can help the people you meet, not the other way around. Real networking is about helping others be more successful through your circle of contacts.

In five sections, Ferrazzi provides overarching strategies and specific steps to help you break out of your shell and start to build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships.

The Mindset - fundamentals behind mutually beneficial networking and things to avoid

The Skill Set - approaches to building your network in a healthy, positive, and ethical way

Turning Connections into Compatriots - giving freely of yourself and your knowledge and maintaining these connections

Connecting in the Digital Age - the value of trading information rather than hoarding it and understanding that the most useful contacts will often come from your fringe connections, rather than your closest friends

Trading Up and Giving Back - practices to strengthen your network, engage with your connections, and understand what type of help you might offer

If you struggle with the traditional idea of “networking,” but recognize it’s a skill that you need to develop, then Never Eat Alone and Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time might be for you. As Ferrazzi observes, “Building a network of friends and colleagues is about building relationships and friendships. It should be fun, not time-consuming.”

Nobody really likes small talk, but with social obligations, school functions, and professional networking there is a definite need to feel comfortable doing it. The real goal is to find something in common that leads to a more natural conversation. Here are a couple of techniques that you can use to get the ball rolling.

Share small details during small talk. Rather than answering the question, “How’s it going?” with “Good, and you?”, expand on your reply with details about your day. For example, you might say, “Great. I took a long walk at lunch, and now I feel fantastic!”

Ask questions. To do this well, it means listening. Once you have some basic background information, you can ask questions that can spark conversation.

Be prepared with relevant topics. The news is an obvious choice. Be aware of the general current events. You can also ask about unique aspects of where they are from or about their occupation.

Respond to “What you do for a living? / What you do for fun?” with something you actually did. Rather than respond with where you work and your title, include something you did last week. The same idea goes for “What you do for fun?” Talk about a recent experience you
had.

When all else fails remember F-O-R-D:

Family

Occupation

Recreation

Dreams

Think of a couple of questions in each category and keep them in the back of your mind. You should be able to strike up a conversation with anyone you meet. Consider some follow-up questions to keep the conversation flowing.

The last pitch in the 1994 Major League Baseball season was thrown when the Major League Players Association began a 232-day strike. The strike canceled the rest of the season – including the 1994 World Series – and did not end until April 1995.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor was a federal district court judge in Manhattan at the time. Sotomayor issued an injunction in response to a petition by the National Labor Relations Board claiming unfair labor practices by the owners. The injunction restored the terms of the earlier labor agreement, allowing the 1995 season to move forward until a new agreement could be reached.
