No one wants to be stuck inside as the weather gets nicer. Improving your time management skills and delegating work appropriately can help you free up time for yourself, friends, and family. Here are a few tips to get you going.

Track your time for a week. Is email interrupting you frequently? Are you constantly putting out fires? Note any patterns you see. This will be your baseline to help you improve your time management moving forward.

Make to-do lists. Whether you use a list app or simple pen and paper, to-do lists help you capture important tasks in one place. From there, you can begin to group and prioritize items as needed.

Follow the 80/20 Rule. Also known as Pareto’s Principle, it suggests that roughly 20 percent of your actions should be responsible for 80 percent of the value created. In other words, focus on the few, larger items on your to-do list that will generate the most significant results.

Minimize task-switching. Every time you switch tasks, it takes several minutes to re-establish your focus. Try concentrating on one task for an extended period of time. Set a time to check your emails, then return client calls, then go through your invoices, etc., instead of bouncing back and forth.

Set a timer. The Pomodoro Technique, created by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s, works like this:

Pick a task

Set a timer for 25 minutes

Focus on that task—and only that task—for the entire 25 minutes

Take a five minute break when the timer goes off

Repeat as needed (take a longer break if you’re doing three to four cycles in a row)

To Delegate or Not to Delegate –
It’s Not Really a Question

We’ve all heard the saying, “if you want something done right, do it yourself.” We can assure you; a lawyer who lives with the billable hour did not utter these words.

Delegation allows you to be more effective and get more done. It's also necessary when you wish to realize your full billable rate as well as spend less time on tasks for which you are not an expert, or that take too long to master. These are just a few of the dozens of reasons why you should practice delegation. The next step is determining what you should delegate.

Here are a few guidelines:

If someone else can do something, especially if they can do it better than you can, delegate it.

Administrative tasks should always be delegated; they take away time from your billable hours.

Delegate things you will procrastinate doing.

Delegate things you don’t know how to do (or will take too long to learn).

Delegate routine or process-heavy tasks.
