Contrary to popular belief, your website is not actually “yours.” You may own the URL and hold a copyright on the content, but an effective business website is created with clients in mind.

Think back to when you were designing your website. Chances are your brainstorming process focused on how you could “sell” potential clients on the legal knowledge and abilities of your office. You probably ended up with a list of things to emphasize like:

Every single practice area you ever practiced

Years of experience

Association memberships

Published legal articles

Professional awards

These are fine for a resume, but you’re not trying to get a job. You’re trying to connect with a potential client. Here are some suggestions for developing content to help you do just that.

What makes your firm different: There is a lot of competition out there. How are you unique? Note: If you can’t answer that question, you may have a bigger issue than your website. Get help here.

How the relationship works: Many people are wary about hiring or looking for a new lawyer. Do your best to describe what they can expect from you from the first consultation to the final payment.

The types of problems you solve: Clients don’t think in terms of practice areas. They want to know how you can help with their specific issues. Provide an explanation of the process, complete with a breakdown of legal terms they will encounter.

Answers to common questions: A blog is a great way to show, not tell, your knowledge. It also provides fresh online content, which can boost your website ranking in online searches.

Personal bios: Along with relevant professional information, attorney bios should include social media links, a few interests or passions, and photos that don’t look like they came from a yearbook.

Contact information: Your contact information should be listed near the top of every page with a call to action encouraging users to reach out. You should also include an expectation of when they can expect to hear back from you.

Focusing on the clients, instead of your firm, can make a big difference in converting clicks to clients. Here are some other helpful resources that can help you create a better website with better content.

In 1976, comedian Johnny Carson sued a man in Michigan using the phrase “Here’s Johnny” coupled with “The World’s Foremost Commodian” to sell portable toilets. Carson sued to stop the practice, claiming he had a right of publicity in the phrase “Here’s Johnny,” as it was famously associated (but not trademarked) with his introduction on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. After losing in district court, Carson won a permanent injunction upon appeal. <a href="

After Carson’s death in 2005, the company owner tried to register the “Here’s Johnny” mark. Unfortunately for him, and for potty humor enthusiasts everywhere, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office quickly flushed his request.
