Dress for the job you want.

Dress how you want to be addressed.

The best-selling 1975 book Dress for Success by John T. Molloy focused on the effects clothing has on professional and personal achievement. Molloy presented the idea that when you are dressed professionally, you appear professional to others, and this perception can help you climb the ladder of success.

Recent studies suggest that dressing well goes beyond simply looking the part. How you dress can affect everything from how you think1 and how well you negotiate2 to your hormone levels3 and heartrate4. Being dressed better than the people you’re working with or competing against gives you an edge – an automatic inference of social power expressed by your clothes. You feel it and you start to act accordingly. The people around you feel it, and they respond in kind. But, what does dressing for success look like?

Here are a few things to consider when standing in front of your closet tomorrow morning.

Fit is key. You don’t want to look like the “fat guy in a little coat” (bonus points if you can name the movie reference*) or a kid playing dress up in mom and dad’s closet. Your best bet is to invest in alterations. It may seem like an unnecessary expense, but there is something to be said for that feeling you get when you put on a custom fit jacket.

Pay attention to the details. You know how important spelling, grammar, and format are when writing a brief. Apply those same principles to your clothing. Avoid showing up with drooping buttons, wrinkled clothing, hanging threads, or scuffed shoes.

Dress for your position – but also your community. Cultural norms vary in different geographical areas - east coast versus west coast, urban communities versus rural communities. Think about the people you work with throughout your day. Picture what they’ll be wearing. Then dress 25% better.5

If you have to ask, you know the answer. Is this tie too loud? Is this skirt too short? Do these shoes seem too casual? If something you are thinking about wearing is raising a red flag, then don’t wear it. You don’t want to spend the whole day distracted and wondering if everyone is judging you. They are. So don’t give them any more ammunition.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Not all of us came into this world with an innate sense of fashion. Ask a friend or family member whose taste you trust to help you go through your wardrobe or accompany you on a shopping trip. Another great source of help can be stores with superior sales staff.

It may seem silly, this focus on clothing. After all, having the perfect suit doesn’t guarantee you a win in court or that you’ll sign another new client. Yet, as studies have shown and as Mark Twain has said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” So get back in the house and put on some pants.

* Bonus points are for fun only. The movie referenced is the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy starring Madison-born Chris Farley.

Say you have a choice between two auto repair shops. Everything about these shops is exactly the same except for one thing. One of the shops has trained, experienced mechanics; the other has self-taught mechanics. Which one would you choose?

If you chose the auto repair shop with the trained mechanics, you wouldn’t be alone. Most of us prefer to trust our business to people who know what they’re doing. That same reasoning explains why it’s so important for law firms to have well-trained, knowledgeable support staff.

In his article, Importance of Employee Training: 6 Reasons Why it Saves You Money, project manager and trainer Brian Benton shares why excuses like “we’re too busy to learn something new” and “we don’t have the money to pay for training” can hurt your business.6

Untrained employees = unhappy employees. According to Fresh HR Insights, employees who aren’t properly trained often become confused about business procedures, feel that their employer isn’t invested in them, and lack much needed confidence.8

Untrained employees are inefficient. SH!FT Disruptive Learning emphasizes that good training helps reduce the time it takes to accomplish work tasks, reduces redundancy, and increases the chances that tasks are done correctly the first time.6

Untrained employees can mean lost time, money, and clients. Employees without good training tend to make more mistakes. Every time a mistake gets made, time and materials are required to fix it. Even worse, a mistake could end up in front of a client, opposing counsel, or a judge – which could severely damage your firm’s reputation.

We are now 26 days into the new year. How’s that resolution coming? If you’ve gotten off track, don’t stress. Remember, it’s a resolution for the new YEAR, not the new 26 days. Meaningful, lasting change can take time.

You may face setbacks - some under your control, and others not.
