It’s that time of year again for many organizations. We’re not talking about the holidays, extended vacations, or winter break. Nope. We’re talking about performance evaluations. While researching for this column, it became apparent that no one seems to enjoy the evaluation process, whether you’re the employee or the employer.

For many employers, the process of completing the form becomes the focus of an evaluation rather than its results - which should include professional development, communication, and helpful feedback about job performance. For the employee, it often means preparing to hear constructive criticism, which recent studies have shown, almost no one takes as it’s intended.1 So, what can you do to try to make the performance evaluation process both productive and pain free? Below are a few tips to help get you started.

For employers:

Focus on behaviors, not personality

Make it a two-way conversation

Have examples and facts

Be honest

Discuss challenges and successes

Agree on specific actions that each of you will take

Keep it positive

Separate compensation and performance discussions

http://images.wisbar.org/Images/DigestEmails/CLE_Countdown.jpg" alt="" width="150 " align="right"/>And the Countdown Begins…

In the rush of the holidays, it often feels like time is not on our side. As of today, there are just 14 days until Thanksgiving, 45 days until Christmas and the start of Hanukkah, and 52 days until the New Year.
If you were admitted to the practice of law in an even year, that means you have 82 days and counting to earn CLE credits or risk late fees and possible suspension for noncompliance.

With all the hustle and bustle at this time of year, earning those remaining CLE credits may seem overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be. Earn CLE credits anytime, anywhere with State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE® CLE OnDemand. You can pause, rewind, and play programs at your convenience. You can report up to 10 CLE credits earned through CLE OnDemand programming each reporting period. CLE OnDemand seminars can be purchased individually, or, if you are an <a href="

It is important to note that ethics and professional responsibility credits cannot be earned through CLE OnDemand programming. However, there are great webcast opportunities available through the <a href="

Get the latest on changes to the Wisconsin Rules of Professional Conduct while earning the ethics credits you need.

Note: Lawyers admitted in 2016 are not required to report their CLE credits until February 1, 2019.

The State Bar's new mentoring program, Ready.Set.Practice, is now accepting new applicants for its second year. Both new lawyers and those who wish to mentor them should apply by November 15.

Your reputation as a skilled professional is vital to the success of your practice. One of the best ways to increase your reputation and your visibility among your peers is through publication in a reputable legal magazine or newsletter. Show off your knowledge in a particular practice area. Your experiences can benefit others in your profession and help you establish yourself as a trusted authority. If your writings meet certain qualifications, you can even earn CLE credits for your efforts.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.
