<h2 style="color: #045394;">5 Ways to Relieve Stress at Work</h2>
<p>According to the American Psychological Association, <a href="
http://time.com/4253107/americans-are-getting-more-stressed-out-study-finds/">stress levels in the U.S. are on the rise</a>. An increasing number of adults report they are under extreme stress and overall average stress levels have risen to 5.1 on a 10-point stress scale. The good news is there are plenty of ways to reduce stress. </p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Clean your desk.</strong> A cluttered desk can make you feel so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to start. If your mind tends to wander, a messy desk is full of distractions that can make it difficult to keep your mind focused. Take a few minutes to organize your work space. For everything on your desk, either file it, move it, or toss it.<sup>1</sup> </li>
<li>
<strong>Make a friend.</strong> Social contact is nature’s antidote to stress. Talking face to face with a good listener can help to quickly calm your nervous system and relieve stress. Don’t have a close friend at the office? Just be more sociable with your co-workers. The next time you take a break, instead of fiddling on your smart phone, step over to a neighbor’s desk for a short chat.<sup>2</sup> </li>

<strong>Shift your schedule.</strong> Slight adjustments to your daily routine can make a hugely positive difference. Leave for work 10-15 minutes early. Those few extra minutes can mean the difference between rushing frantically to make it to the office and having time to ease into your day. Schedule short breaks throughout the day to take a walk or make small talk with a co-worker. Also, try to get away from your desk during your lunch break.<sup>3</sup> </li>

<strong>Laugh it off.</strong> Laughter really is the best medicine for stress. It increases your heart rate and releases endorphins, making you feel happier. Consider keeping a collection of jokes and cartoons. The next time a stressful situation threatens to overwhelm you, go through your collection until something makes you laugh out loud.<sup>4</sup> </li>

<strong>Pack smart snacks</strong>. Processed food can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Try eating more fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Omega-3 fatty acids like those found in flax seeds are also a good choice.<sup>5</sup> </li>
