About the State Bar of Wisconsin Certified Paralegal™ Program

Raising the Bar for Paralegals in Wisconsin

Paralegals are key players in delivering efficient, accurate, and cost-effective legal services for legal teams and clients across Wisconsin. Behind every successful outcome is a skilled paralegal who keeps everyone on deadline, records organized, and attorneys fully prepared. As the demand for skilled, knowledgeable legal support continues to rise, so does the need for clear, credible standards that recognize excellence in the paralegal profession.

That’s why the State Bar of Wisconsin, in partnership with the Paralegal Association of Wisconsin, created the State Bar of Wisconsin Certified Paralegal™ (SBWCP™) program.

What is the SBWCP Certification?

The SBWCP designation is the only certification program developed specifically for paralegals working in Wisconsin. It provides a benchmark for legal employers, attorneys, and the public to identify paralegals who meet high standards of competence, professionalism, and ethical integrity.

Paralegals who earn this credential have demonstrated:

  • Wisconsin-Specific Knowledge

SBWCP paralegals are well-versed in substantive law, court procedures, and legal practices unique to Wisconsin. This state-specific focus ensures they can hit the ground running in any Wisconsin-based legal setting.

  • Verified Education and Experience

Certification requires proof of legal education and on-the-job experience, helping employers feel confident in a paralegal’s qualifications from day one.

  • Commitment to Ongoing Learning

Certified paralegals are required to stay current with continuing legal education (CLE), keeping their knowledge fresh and their skills sharp.

  • Dedication to Ethics and Professionalism

Every SBWCP paralegal upholds the legal profession's core values, including integrity, confidentiality, and client-centered service.

Why Certification Matters

For attorneys and law firms, hiring an SBWCP paralegal means bringing a trusted, capable, and credentialed legal professional onto your team. For clients, it’s reassurance that their legal matters are being supported by someone who meets the highest professional standards. And for paralegals, earning the SBWCP designation is a powerful way to stand out, enhance your career, and signal your dedication to excellence.

Trusted. Verified. Wisconsin Certified.

The State Bar of Wisconsin Certified Paralegal credential isn’t just a title – it’s a trusted symbol of professional achievement in Wisconsin’s legal community. Whether you’re looking to advance your career or hire with confidence, SBWCP™ is the mark that matters.

Certification Review Process

After receiving each applicant's materials, the Program Registrar determines if the applicant meets the requirements of certification or recertification.
