Law is not as lucrative as it was in the past. Young lawyers have it rough, but it’s not just their problem. JFK made the expression “a rising tide lifts all boats” famous. I don’t want to say, “Ask not what [the bar] can do for you…” But, when you help others, you help yourself.

Because of student loans, the amount of money young lawyers need to survive is often more than they earn. That does not mean employers are making a killing. If it did, there wouldn’t be an unemployment problem. Many employers don’t believe paying a higher salary is worth the risk. Through the State Bar, lawyers can help alter that equation. We need more “Practice 101” type articles, leadership opportunities for young lawyers, and free CLEs.

This is why, as a member of the Challenges Facing New Lawyers Committee, I argued to the Section Leaders Council that each Section Board should have a designated young lawyer seat. In our report to the Board of Governors, I suggested making access to expired CLE webcasts free to young lawyers, and I advocated developing standards of professionalism for employing attorneys.

Some argue we need fewer law schools, interest-free student loans, bankruptcy reform, and various other long shots. I’m all for it. Check out my blog. But, we need realistic ideas too. I want to be the YLD President-elect, and I ask you for your vote.
