It can be quite a shock when you entrust money or property to a lawyer and it disappears. That violation of trust can make you feel helpless, but there may be a way to get back on your feet.
If you believe you have suffered financial loss due to the dishonest conduct of your attorney, you can file a claim with the Wisconsin Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection. The Fund may be able to reimburse that money, up to a maximum amount.
The Wisconsin Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection, created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1981, is designed to provide reimbursement to clients who have incurred financial losses due to the dishonest conduct of their attorneys under Supreme Court Rule 12.04-12.12. State Bar of Wisconsin members are assessed annual fees to finance the Fund.
