    Brian LucareliBrian Lucareli, Marquette 1989, has joined the Milwaukee office of Foley & Lardner LLP as director of fiduciary management. He oversees support and growth of the firm’s wealth and trust business. He previously was senior vice president and director with Johnson Bank Wealth.

    Robert J. Marchant, U.W. 1997 cum laude, has joined the Madison office of Michael Best Strategies LLC as director of governmental affairs, managing operations and assisting in the development of long-term strategy. Previously he was deputy secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds.

    Luis F. Padilla, U.W. 1975, has become officer in charge of the National Labor Relations Board’s Subregion 24 Office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, directing case-handling activities in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

    Rich PoirierRich Poirier, Marquette 1986, has been promoted to president of Church Mutual Insurance Corp., Merrill. He previously was the chief operating officer.

    James N. Saul, Lewis & Clark 2007, has been promoted to partner at McGillivray Westerberg & Bender LLC, Madison, concentrating on environmental, utility, and general litigation.

    Bryan D. Woods, U.W. 1972, has joined the Madison office of DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C., practicing commercial litigation and focusing on business and personal injury matters, products liability, medical and dental negligence, and insurance issues.

    Diane C. Lowe, U.W. 1991, has formed Lowe Law LLC, 1341 Nixon Ave., Eau Claire, a general practice firm providing statewide representation.

    Micabil Diaz-Martinez, Marquette 1989, has opened Diaz Law Firm LLC, 2413 Parmenter St., Middleton, focusing on bankruptcy and veterans’ benefits. The firm also offers Spanish and French translation services.

    Appointments, Elections

    Bill Duffin, Iowa 1987, has been appointed a magistrate judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He previously was a shareholder with the Milwaukee office of Godfrey & Kahn S.C.

    Dennis R. McBride, N.Y.U. 1980, has been reappointed to the Seventh Circuit Pattern Civil Jury Instructions Committee by Chief Judge Diane P. Wood of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has served on the committee since 2002. He is a senior trial attorney in the Milwaukee-area office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    Steven B. Novy, Notre Dame 1973, has been elected first vice president of the Transportation Lawyers Association, an independent, international bar association. He is a partner in the Chicago office of Chilton Yambert & Porter LLP.

    James D. Peterson, U.W. 1998, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.  He previously was a shareholder with the Madison office of Godfrey & Kahn S.C.

    Thomas J. Phillips, Utah 1973, has been appointed vice chair of the American Bar Association’s Tax Section S Corporations Committee. Phillips is a partner at the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP and focuses in taxation.

    Matthew D. Rowe, Minnesota 1997cum laude, has been appointed to the board of Meritas, a global alliance of independent business law firms. He is withRuder Ware L.L.S.C., Wausau, practicing corporate finance and securities, mergers and acquisitions, and acquisition financings and representing financial institutions in regulatory and other matters.

    Tom Shorter, Northeastern 1996, has been elected to the American Health Lawyers Association board. He is a shareholder at the Milwaukee office of Godfrey & Kahn S.C. and chair of the health care practice group.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    John W. Daniels, Harvard 1974, was awarded a Doctor of Business degree from U.W.-Milwaukee and the U.W. System Board of Regents, for his distinguished background in the Milwaukee community as a business professional, leader, and change agent of the highest integrity. He is chair emeritus of the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP.

    The Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP is the recipient of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association’s 2014 Beacon of Justice Award for its Lawyer for a Day Project at Milwaukee County’s Domestic Abuse Injunction Court.

    Steve Weld, U.W. 1972, received the 2014 Badger of the Year award from the Chippewa Valley Chapter of Wisconsin Alumni Association for his community contributions. Weld is president of Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C., Eau Claire.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    GE Healthcare and Quarles & Brady LLP partnered with Street Law Inc. presenting a workshop to increase knowledge of and interest in the law and legal careers for students at the Carmen High School of Science and Technology, Milwaukee.
