    Liliana Kalogjera Barry, Columbia 2003, authored “How to Avoid Medicolegal Problems,” a chapter in The Academic Medicine Handbook: A Guide to Achievement and Fulfillment for Academic Faculty (Springer 2013). She is with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Milwaukee, and also an assistant clinical professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

    Dennis MelowskiDennis Melowski, Marquette 1993, Melowski & Associates LLC, Sheboygan, has coauthored Inside the Minds: Witness Preparation and Examination for DUI Proceedings (Aspatore Publishing 2013).

    The Hon. Thomas H. Barland, U.W. 1956, and Michael J. Brose, William Mitchell 1991, coauthored the recently revised The Wisconsin Rules of Evidence: A Courtroom Handbook (State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE®, 8th ed. 2013). Barland is a reserve judge and a member of the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. Brose is a shareholder in the New Richmond office of Doar Drill & Skow S.C.

    Rose Ann Wasserman, U.W. 1984, authored the recently revised fifth edition of A Guide to Wisconsin Employment Discrimination Law (State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE®, 5th ed. 2013). She is an administrative law judge with the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division, Milwaukee office.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Carmel Capati, U.W. 1998, received an honorable mention in the Virginia Hart Special Recognition Award competition, which recognizes outstanding women in state government. Capati manages the Wisconsin Court System Interpreter Program.

    David B. Kern, Michigan 1979, has been elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He is a partner at Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee.

    The Hon. James R. Kieffer, Marquette 1976, Waukesha County Circuit Court, received the Judge of the Year award from the Wisconsin chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

    Mark A KircherMark A Kircher, Marquette 1985 summa cum laude, has been inducted as a Fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is a partner with Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, practicing product liability, toxic tort, and personal injury litigation.

    Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge Daniel L. Konkol, Marquette 1976, and his wife were selected as marshals for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Milwaukee, in recognition of their many years of service to the Shamrock Club.

    Nicole L. KreklauNicole L. Kreklau, Hamline 2005, is a finalist for Public Justice’s 2013 Trial Lawyer of the Year National Public Interest Award, in recognition of her work on a qui tam action against a nursing home. She is with Pearson, Randal & Schumacher P.A., Minneapolis.

    L. Katie MasonL. Katie Mason, U.W. 2006, has been selected to participate in the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges Next Generation Program. She is with the business reorganization practice at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee.

    The Milwaukee County Drug Treatment Court Team received the 2013 Agency Research Collaboration Award for its work with the UW-Milwaukee School of Social Welfare’s criminal justice department.

    Theresa M. Owens, Drake 1992, was inducted as a Fellow of the Institute for Court Management at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in May. She is executive assistant to Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson.

    Harvey WendelHarvey Wendel, U.W. 1963, is the first recipient of the Dane County Bar Association’s Harvey L. Wendel Service Award, to be given to members of the DCBA for exemplary service to the legal profession and community. He is with Murphy Desmond S.C., Madison.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    Foley & Lardner partnered with the Milwaukee Public Schools for a second year to provide donated supplies to Wisconsin Conservatory for Lifelong Learning students at a “school supply store event.”
