    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Emily E. Ames, U.W. 2016, has joined Lin Law LLC, Green Bay, as an associate. She practices in estate planning, elder law, probate, real estate, corporate and business matters, and general civil litigation.

    Ryan Froelich, Marquette 2002, has joined Bob Janssen, Marquette 1988, of Janssen Law LLC, Green Bay. Froelich practices in personal injury, worker’s compensation, and general civil litigation.

    Don Gallo, Marquette 1990, has joined the environmental practice group at the Waukesha office of Axley Brynelson LLP. He assists clients on a broad range of environmental issues such as wetland and waterway permitting, hazardous waste compliance, and brownfield development projects. He also has served on advisory committees for the development of several Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Department of Commerce regulations and is the author of several brownfields initiatives.

    Christopher B. GierhartChristopher B. Gierhart, U.W. 2012, has been elected a shareholder of Weld Riley S.C., Eau Claire, and continues to practice with the government law and business and corporate sections. He represents local municipalities in matters including representation at meetings, advising on compliance issues, and prosecution of citations; and assists clients on personal and commercial real estate transactions, including preparing and reviewing purchase agreements, lease agreements, and closing documents and on business organization matters.

    Ramzy HalabyRamzy Halaby, American Univ. 2002, has joined the Madison office of the personal injury firm Hupy and Abraham. He previously worked as a personal injury attorney in the Washington, D.C., area and is licensed to practice in Arkansas and Wisconsin.

    Patricia Hanz, U.W. 1985, has been appointed general counsel of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Bethesda, Md. She provides legal counsel to both the commission and agency staff and manages the Office of the General Counsel and the Office of the Secretary. She was previously deputy general counsel for Briggs & Stratton Corp., Milwaukee.

    Michael D. Karp, Marquette 2017, has joined Karp & Iancu S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate and focuses primarily on personal injury matters.

    Lindsey CroasdaleAngela M. RustLora L. ZimmerLindsey Croasdale, Loyola Chicago 2017, Angela M. Rust, Marquette 2007, and Lora L. Zimmer, Yale 2003, have joined McCarty Law LLP, Appleton. Croasdale focuses on health law, privacy law, and employment and labor matters. She works closely with health care providers to draft and review HIPAA policies and other regulatory compliance matters. She also assists employers with contract review, employee policies, disciplinary matters, and discrimination issues.

    Rust focuses on health law and serves the firm in an of counsel position while continuing her position as chief legal officer at NOVO Health. She advises independent provider groups as their general counsel and assists them with general corporate matters, compliance, and contract drafting, including physician employment contracts.

    Zimmer focuses on health law. She serves regularly as general counsel for physician groups, clinics, federally qualified health centers, and other health care providers to advise them on matters such as compliance issues, mergers, and physician employment contracts. Also, as a Title IX investigator, she performs independent investigations and offers detailed reports in response to alleged violations of schools’ sexual misconduct policies.

    Rust and Zimmer previously were partners at Hinshaw & Culbertson, Appleton, and Croasdale previously was a law clerk at Hinshaw & Culbertson.

    Shane Brunner, U.W. 1999 cum laude, has joined the Madison office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP as a partner in the firm’s litigation practice group. Brunner has represented clients in intellectual property litigation and complex commercial disputes, including patent, trademark, trade secret, unfair competition, and contract matters in the pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, biotechnology, and computer technologies industries. He previously was a partner with a national intellectual property law firm.

    Jennifer L. CiralskyJennifer L. Ciralsky, Georgetown 2002 magna cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of Michael Best as a partner in the labor and employment relations practice group. She advises clients on employment laws including Title VII, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, and Wisconsin wage and hour laws and provides counsel on discipline and terminations as well as affirmative action obligations. She previously worked at a global labor and employment firm.

    Chad LevanetzRonald MetzlerChristopher PahlChad Levanetz, Marquette 2005, Ronald Metzler, U.W. 1985, and Christopher Pahl, U.W. 2004, have joined Ruder Ware, working in the firm’s new office, 222 Cherry Street, Green Bay. Levanetz focuses on litigation, counseling clients in real estate, construction, and general business disputes. Metzler is a commercial attorney with close ties to the banking industry. Pahl focuses on real estate development and condominium law as well as commercial transactions and estate planning.

    Jessica A. Braun, Marquette 2017, and Christopher M. D’Errico, Marquette 2017, have joined Schober & Mitchell S.C., as members of the firm’s estate planning and Title XIX practice group. Braun and D’Errico will serve clients in the firm’s New Berlin, Oconomowoc, and Racine offices.

    Benjamin J. Pliskie, U.W. 2001, has founded Red Oak Law LLC, 200 S. Executive Dr., Brookfield, a boutique real estate, estate planning, and business law practice that provides legal services and consulting to clients in Wisconsin and Illinois. Pliskie previously was with BP Peterman Law Group LLC.

    Appointments, Elections

    Ave BieAve Bie, U.W. 1990, managing partner of the Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP, has been named board chair for the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the nonprofit that operates New York state’s power grid. Bie, former chair of the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, has spent her career serving in state and local government positions and counseling utilities and independent power producers. Her experience encompasses all aspects of energy and utilities, from governmental relations and permitting to counseling on infrastructure and long-range planning.

    Emily M. LongEmily M. Long, U.W. 1998, has been elected to the Eau Claire County Circuit Court, where she will replace the Hon. William Gabler, Marquette 1974, when he retires this summer. She practices in Weld Riley S.C.’s divorce and family law, criminal defense, and municipal prosecution sections. Before joining Weld Riley S.C., Long prosecuted felony and misdemeanor domestic violence and sexual assault cases as an assistant district attorney for both Eau Claire and La Crosse counties and developed and managed the Eau Claire County Diversion Program.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Louis B. Butler Jr.The Hon. Louis B. Butler Jr., U.W. 1977, has been invited to join the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers as an Honorary Fellow. The academy’s membership is limited and by invitation only. Butler, a partner with the Metro Milwaukee office of DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C., will be recognized at the academy’s 2018 Fall Meeting. As the first African-American person to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Butler participated in decisions that had a significant impact on Wisconsin’s legal landscape. He was the first public defender in Wisconsin’s history to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, in McCoy v. Wisconsin Court of Appeals, 486 U.S. 429 (1988), and was nominated by Pres. Barack Obama to be a U.S. District Court Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin.

    Six lawyers with DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. were recognized by the Wisconsin Access to Justice Commission as members of its 2017 Wisconsin Pro Bono Honor Society. These attorneys distinguished themselves by providing at least 50 hours of qualifying pro bono legal services in 2017 to assist people of limited means. The lawyers are Lindsey Anderson, Marquette 2016, family law; Troy Mayne, Minnesota 1988, real estate law; John Movroydis, Marquette 1977, estate planning; Michele Perreault, U.W. 2003, family law; Megan Senatori, U.W. 2001, litigation; and Raluca Vais-Ottosen, Louisiana State 2004, immigration law.
