State Bar President’s Statement on Announcement from

    Attorney General Van Hollen

Madison, WI – State Bar of Wisconsin President Patrick J. Fiedler issued the following statement regarding Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen’s announcement that he would not seek reelection in 2014:

I would like to thank Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen for his years of service to the people of Wisconsin and to the legal profession.

Attorney General Van Hollen played a critical role in ensuring that Wisconsin continues to have a strong criminal justice system through rewarding attorneys with increasing years of service. His efforts are helping the state retain experienced assistant district attorneys, state public defenders and assistant attorneys general.

In addition to working to achieve pay progression for attorneys in the criminal justice system, Van Hollen has helped maintain much-needed funding for the State Public Defender’s Office. This funding assists the state of Wisconsin in meeting its constitutional obligation to provide representation to the accused, and ensures that our court system runs effectively and efficiently.

Having known J.B. Van Hollen for many years, and having worked with him in various capacities, I hold my colleague in high esteem. I wish him well in the next phase of his legal career.

Fiedler is the 58th president of the State Bar of Wisconsin. He is currently a partner at Axley Brynelson LLP. Fiedler served as a Dane County Circuit Court judge from 1993 to 2011, and was Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections from 1991 to 1993.  Fiedler also served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin and as Waukesha County Assistant District Attorney.
