George C. Brown chosen as new State Bar executive director
April 17, 2000 - George Brown has been chosen by the
State Bar of Wisconsin's Board of Governors as the Bar's new executive
director. The Board made the decision this past weekend at its regular
spring meeting.
Brown has served as interim executive director since last July. He
was selected after an extensive, nationwide search that resulted in more
than 60 applicants for the job.
Brown joined the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1986, serving as its
public affairs director until March of 1997, when he left briefly to
work in government relations for the Madison law firm of Quarles &
Brady. Brown rejoined the State Bar in July of 1998.
Prior to his work with the State Bar, Brown worked for the State
Assembly Democratic Caucus staff, and before that as chief aide to State
Rep. Marlin Schneider, when Schneider was Assembly co-chairman of the
Joint Finance Committee. Prior to his work in the Legislature, Brown
worked for the University of Wisconsin - Madison as well as the State
Historical Society.
"The State Bar will continue to improve member and public services,
and I'm excited to lead that effort," said Brown. State Bar President
Leonard Loeb said Brown was an easy choice for the job. "We settled for
the best and the brightest," said Loeb.
Brown will lead program and policy direction for the Bar, and will
deal with issues management and financial policies and procedures, while
overseeing a staff of nearly 80 employees, more than 50 bar committees,
25 sections and a number of divisions.
