Milwaukee Attorney Elected to Top State Bar Post
MADISON, Wis., April 27, 2001 - Attorney Patricia K.
Ballman of Milwaukee has been elected president-elect of the State Bar
of Wisconsin. "I am very excited to hear the news," said Ballman. "It is
a significant responsibility, but I am confident that I can count on
help from many talented attorneys, including my friend and co-candidate,
Dennis Purtell."
Ballman, of Quarles & Brady LLP in Milwaukee, won the race for
State Bar president-elect by defeating Dennis Purtell, also of
Milwaukee. Ballman will begin her term on July 1 when Gerry Mowris of
Madison succeeds Gary Bakke of New Richmond as State Bar president.
Ballman is committed to improving diversity. "I plan to work on
increasing the diversity of the participants and leaders in the State
Bar - more minorities, including women, as well as in-house counsel, and
other under-represented segments of the bar - so that we can effectively
meet new challenges facing our profession, and ultimately better serve
the public."
Ballman earned her law degree, with honors, from Marquette University
Law School in 1977 when she joined Quarles & Brady. She is a member
of the Family Law Section of the Milwaukee Bar Association, the State
Bar of Wisconsin, and the American Bar Association. She has served on
the Marital Property, Specialization, Insurance for Members and Pro Bono
committees of the State Bar, is former president and board member of the
Milwaukee Bar, and a member of the Board of Governors for the American
Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Ballman has been listed in Who's Who of
American Women since the 1985-1986 edition.
Ballman's community activities include serving as a volunteer at the
Family Justice Clinic, chair of the United Way of Milwaukee Personnel
Committee and a member of its Finance Committee, a member of the Equal
Justice Coalition Campaign Committee, and former chair and member of the
Village of Shorewood Board of Review.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional association,
created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who hold a law
license in Wisconsin. With more than 20,000 members, the State Bar aids
the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members, and carries out initiatives
to educate the public about the legal system. The elected officers work
with the State Bar Board of Governors to manage and direct the
association's affairs.
Ballman can be reached at Quarles & Brady at (414) 277-5145. For
