High schools visit Wisconsin Supreme Court

Jan. 3, 2000 - High school students from across Wisconsin have watched oral agruments before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and talked with the justices, thanks to Court with Class, a program sponsored by the court and the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Court with Class has won two national awards since its inception three years ago. The program's aim is to enrich the high school civics curriculum by bringing high school students from around the state to watch a Supreme Court hearing and meet with a justice. Prior to the field trips, teachers receive a variety of teaching materials from the Supreme Court and the State Bar of Wisconsin.

The program brings a total of approximately 1,000 high school students to the Supreme Court during each Court term (September - June).

Students from across the state visit the court

Fifteen students from Wisconsin Heights High School in Mazomanie will travel to the Capitol Square to watch a Supreme Court oral argument at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, and meet with Justice Jon P. Wilcox over the noon hour.

The students will watch an appeal involving a City of Milwaukee firefighter who was injured in the line of duty when a motorist without insurance hit the fire truck on which she was riding. Her own insurance did not cover her, as it specifically excluded coverage for accidents in which the insured is riding in, or driving, an emergency vehicle in connection with his/her employment. The Supreme Court's opinion in this case will help to clarify Wisconsin law on the circumstances under which insurance companies must provide coverage in accidents involving uninsured motorists.

Thirty students from Pardeeville High School will travel to the Capitol Square to watch a Supreme Court oral argument at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, and meet with Justice Diane S. Sykes over the noon hour.

The students will watch an appeal involving a proposed gravel quarry in the Rock County community of Milton.

Twenty-five students from Pius XI High School in Milwaukee will travel to the Capitol Square to watch a Supreme Court oral argument at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, and meet with Justice Diane S. Sykes over the noon hour.

The students will watch an appeal of a criminal case from Sheboygan County in which the Supreme Court will decide whether a person may be ordered to pay overdue fines that are unrelated to the current case against him/her as a condition of probation.
