Sullivan named Judge of the Year
Dec. 3, 1999 - Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge
Michael P. Sullivan has been named the 1999 State Bar of Wisconsin Judge
of the Year. The award recognizes judges who exceed the call of judicial
office and improve the judicial system during the past year.
Judge Sullivan will receive the award at the Bench/Bar Conference in
Milwaukee January 27, 2000. The State Bar's Bench/Bar Committee gives
out the award each year. Committee Chair Maria Lazar said the committee
is pleased to be able to recognize Judge Sullivan's accomplishments as a
judge. "Judge Sullivan is an outstanding example of judicial commitment
and excellence. He is uniformly regarded by practitioners as one of the
best judges in Milwaukee County," said Lazar.
Judge Sullivan began his law career as an Assistant City Attorney in
Milwaukee in 1970. He was appointed the first State Judicial Court
Commissioner, and in 1977 was elected a Milwaukee County Circuit Court
Judge. He has served in that capacity ever since, having been re-elected
in 1983, 1989 and 1995.
Judge Sullivan has been consistently ranked at or near the top of all
the Milwaukee County judges in judicial polls conducted by the Milwaukee
Bar Association. He helped develop pro se litigant forms that are now
used in Milwaukee County Family Court. These forms are now being
considered for use by courts statewide by the Judicial Forms Committee.
Judge Sullivan is also co-producer of an instructional video for lay
people on how to use the forms.
