State Bar seeking nominations for judicial awards
July 31, 2000 - The State Bar of Wisconsin is
seeking nominations for two judicial awards: the Judge of the Year Award
and the Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award. The deadline for nominations
is October 17, 2000.
This year the nomination process has been streamlined. A nomination
letter explaining why the nominee is exceptional is required. Any
relevant and noteworthy information should be included in this
letter.
Through its Judge of the Year and Lifetime Jurist Achievement awards,
the State Bar's Bench/Bar Committee annually honors two jurists whose
excellent work is worthy of recognition. The 2000 awards will be
presented in May 2001 during the State Bar's annual convention in Lake
Geneva.
The Judge of the Year Award, which began in 1996, recognizes a jurist
who has exceeded the call of judicial office and who has improved the
judicial system during the past year. He or she shows leadership in
advancing the quality of justice and judicial education; exemplifies
high ideals, personal character, and judicial competence; and is
actively involved in community efforts that enhance the judicial
system.
Eau Claire Circuit Court Judge Thomas Barland received the first
Judge of the Year award. Other recipients include Racine County Circuit
Judge Dennis Barry, Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Harold
Froehlich and, in 1999, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Michael P.
Sullivan.
The Jurist Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a jurist, with at
least 12 years experience as a trial judge, who has demonstrated
outstanding, long-term judicial service during his or her years as a
sitting judge.
The first recipient of the award was Hon. John A. Decker in 1998.
Other recipients include Hon. Patrick Sheedy, Hon. Peter Pappas and Hon.
Mark J. Farnum.
The deadline for submittal of nomination letters for either award is
October 17. For nomination instructions or more information, contact Patricia Morgan at the State Bar at
(608) 250-6107 or (800) 444-9404, ext. 6107.
