State Bar seeking law firms, businesses for Summer Minority
Clerkship Program
Madison, December 1, 1998 - The State Bar of
Wisconsin is encouraging private law firms, corporations and government
agencies in the state to participate in the 1999 summer Minority
Clerkship Program. Participating employers hire one or more first-year
law students at their organization's normal salary for first-year summer
clerks.
For five years, the program has provided clerkship opportunities to
more than 70 first-year minority law students, and has also provided
employers with the opportunity to get quality students for summer work
and increase their diversity at the same time. Donald Schultz of
American Family Insurance, says the program is an excellent way to
"obtain viewpoints that may not necessarily have been thought of or
considered had there not been minority personnel."
These summer clerkships go to applicants selected by committees made
up of practicing attorneys and UW and Marquette law school faculty. The
selection is based on maturity, judgment, motivation, interpersonal
skills, academic achievement, writing, research, analytical ability,
work experience and recommendations.
