State Bar offers assistance to members and others impacted by severe weather

LightningJuly 27, 2010 – Practical advice for State Bar of Wisconsin members and others impacted by the recent severe weather is available on the State Bar’s website, which includes a disaster resources page to help members get back up and running.

For example, advice on dealing with waterlogged computers, wet files, staying connected to clients, and setting up an office can be found at 8 Tips to Begin Recovering.

For members who need more in-depth assistance, Practice411™ State Bar Practice Management Advisor Nerino Petro is available by calling (800) 444-9404, ext. 6012. Petro can offer information, solutions, and suggestions on how to best get your practice back on track.

Homeowners impacted by the storms can call the State Bar’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service at (800) 362-9082 between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday to find a qualified lawyer or other legal help.

Callers who use this service will not be given legal advice over the phone. However, they will be connected with a legal assistant who is experienced in analyzing potential legal problems and in locating the best source of help, which may be an attorney or other resources.

Home repair contractors are not licensed by the state of Wisconsin but property owners can contact the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, to determine if specific contractors have had complaints filed against them by calling (800) 422-7128. The agency also offers other consumer protection tips on its website.

The University of Wisconsin – Extension has posted advice on cleaning household items in flooded basements. Additional advice and links are available at the State Bar’s disaster resources page.

Finally, Wisconsin Emergency Management posts updated information about storm-related damage, advice from state agencies and other useful information on its website.
