Clients' Security Fund disburses $25K, sets FY 05 assessment
The Clients' Security Fund Committee approved reimbursements to 10
victims of lawyer theft in March. It also set the fiscal year (FY) 2005
assessment at $10.
The committee approved reimbursements totaling $26,461.16 to 10
victims of lawyer theft. Claims were approved for clients of Allen E.
Schatz (one claim for $419), the late Brian H. Blacher (four claims
totaling $10,457), Francia M. Evers (two claims totaling $2,600), the
late Gary M. Williams (one claim for $2,135), Clay F. Teasdale (one
claim for $950), and William J. Gilbert (one claim for $9,900). The
committee deferred action on two claims totaling $150,000 to its
September meeting. The number of claims approved during fiscal year 2004
is 22, for a total of $83,002.96.
The committee set the FY 05 assessment at $10, based on the
antici-pated fund balance at the end of the current fiscal year and
claims anticipated to be filed for consideration in FY 05.
The supreme court established the fund to reimburse people who lose
money through dishonest acts of Wisconsin attorneys, including unearned
retainer, theft from estate, misappropriation of funds, conversion of
trust account funds, and theft by investment. All claims for
reimbursement and all proceedings of the committee are subject to SCR
12.04.
